Never heard of monorail from Osaka to Kyoto. Approx. 10 to 12 min on bullet train from shin Osaka. Approx 30 min on local train. If it quiet you want stay in Kyoto for the night. If you want to venture out stay in Osaka.

How long are you Japan? There is more to see in Japan than Kyoto? Nice place many temples and shrines but there is more to see. Did or are you going to get a JR pass for foreigners? If so travel Japan! Been there more than 40 times through the years and I am still finding new places to see off the normal tourist destinations. Leave for another trip to Japan in about 2 weeks. Looking forward to it. Have fun and explore!

JR pass for foreigners are a bargain especially when one is travelling all over Japan but we have 4 nights then heading to Singapore, Malaysia, then Brunei.

Judy Is it necessary to purchase the JR pass or Kyoto train & bus unlimited pass? Did you take the bus or train from Kansai airport to Kyoto?

We purchased the 7 day pass was definitely worth it depending if your going to travel the country otherwise the local trains are quite cheap. We took the express train from kyoto to airport.
