Plans have just come together for a trip to Cape Town with my sister in September. She'll be attending a conference during the days, so I'll be spending quite a bit of time on my own. Haven't made any plans yet but looking for some interesting and safe suggestions. I love hiking so Table Mountain and area are a draw. Would appreciate any tips on what to see/do/eat while I'm there.

Hop on hop off bus can also take you on a wine tour.

If you're there during a full moon, the Lion's Head is a popular night hike. The trail can be challenging because of the crowds, but the view of Cape Town at night is pretty spectacular.

Agreed. This was the sunset from up there on Freedom Day.

Congratulations on planning your exciting trip to Cape Town with your sister! While she's attending her conference, you'll have ample time to explore this vibrant city. Here are some interesting and safe suggestions to make the most of your solo adventure:

Hike Table Mountain

Since you mentioned your love for hiking, Table Mountain should definitely be on your list. The iconic flat-topped mountain offers breathtaking views of the city and surrounding area. You can choose from various trails with varying difficulty levels, so pick one that suits your fitness level.

Explore the Waterfront Area

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is a lively hub with shops, restaurants, bars, and attractions. Stroll along the promenade, admire the docked boats, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. You can also visit the Two Oceans Aquarium, which houses a diverse array of marine life.

Visit Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

Nestled at the foot of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch is a paradise for nature lovers. Explore its beautiful gardens, admire the indigenous plants, and take a relaxing walk through its forested areas. The garden also offers guided tours and events.

Discover Bo-Kaap

Bo-Kaap, also known as the Cape Malay Quarter, is a charming neighborhood known for its colorful houses and rich history. Take a guided tour to learn about the area's cultural heritage and visit the Auwal Mosque, the oldest mosque in South Africa.

Explore Robben Island

For a historical experience, take a ferry to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. You can visit the prison cells, learn about the island's history, and admire the surrounding views.

Enjoy Local Delicacies

Cape Town is a foodie's paradise! Indulge in the city's diverse culinary scene. Try traditional dishes like bobotie, bunny chow, and chakalaka. You'll also find a wide range of seafood, including fresh oysters, mussels, and linefish.

Safety Tips

While Cape Town is generally a safe city, it's always wise to take precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, avoid walking alone at night in isolated areas, and keep your valuables secure. Consider joining a guided tour or group activity for added peace of mind.
