We flew through Narita. If you do, take the Narita Express in to Tokyo (buy for train tickets at airport, show you are a Canadian and it's only about $40 Cdn return and a fabulous ride (about 1.5 hours). You need to book a spot for the way back too at some point before you head back. Figure out which prefecture (area) of Tokyo you are staying at get off at the right stop. (Ie- we stayed in Shinjuku, good area for tourists). You may need to take a taxi or JR Line train to your area/hotel. It's a pretty intricate system so do your homework on it. You will love Tokyo. We used Haneda tours for a day tour, they were fantastic.

We flew into Narita and caught a train into Tokyo, very efficient. If you by a rail pass before you go to the country some lines are covered by it from the airport into Tokyo.

Haneda, most of the domestic flights use it, closer to Tokyo downtown and cheaper to travel.
but considering you need to fly 12 hours in the air I would just pick the best deal for the flight first, airport is the last concern for me. there is no way you have to waste extra hours once you got there. unlike LRT, there is absolutely ZERO delay for Japanese trains. use your Google map plan your trip, you will find out the exactly time u need to travel between the two airports and Tokyo.

We are planning to leave Edm, Canada to Kuala Lumpur. Some flights have a layover in Tokyo for more than 7 hour then Tokyo to KL for under $900. I thought we have an option to stop for 3 nights.

Their subway and train system is complex, it takes some time to study and plan. Having said that it makes perfect sense once you figure it out. The lines are recolour coded, numbered and named with lots of English signage. Don't be afraid to ask questions. People are extremely polite and orderly,they respect line ups, allow others to exit trains before boarding and don't push.

It is a verry clean, orderly, polite society. We really enjoyed the local food, signs and high speed train travel.

Hanneda is in the city of Tokyo and Narita is 40 minutes out from Tokyo Station. Take the Narita Express to Tokyo for a relaxing train ride to Tokyo Station approximately 28,000 Yen. Don't forget to get your Japan Rail pass. If you do you can use the pass for Narita Express to Tokyo station or any other station it stops at. As for flights to Haneda from Edmonton yes to can fly with a connection either Calgary or vancouver. Hope this helps.
