Where in HNL? If you're in Waikiki, I'm sorry to say there's not much that is AUTHENTIC Hawaiian Cuisine. The International Market closed down and was replaced by an actual partial-outdoor shopping center so the good plate lunches there have been replaced with Panda Express and Sbarro.
Musubi Cafe Iyasume - excellent place to start your day with onigiri and musubi. Or snacks for a road trip.
Marukame Udon which was already said - Closest franchise from Japan to Mainland North America. The lineup is long, but moves fast.
L&L BBQ and Rainbow Drive-In is where it's at for a solid plate lunch near Waikiki. But they are still outside of the Waikiki area and will take some work to get to, especially if you don't have a car.
If you can get to it, Romy's Kahuku Prawns Shrimp Hut is amazing for a lunch. We rent cars when we hit Oahu and we usually stop by it on the way back from the North Shore (along with the Dole Plantation for some Dole Whip too)
IDK If Macky's Shrimp Truck is still running too, but it gives Romy's a run for it's money.
Everything else you can more or less find here - Teppanyaki, sashimi, Bar food with surf and turf dishes, Dim Sum including Xia Long Bao... The Malasadas are cool too, but those are like Portugese. I get them from Leonard's Bakery instead of the place the above person recommended. Nothing else really stands out. Panda Express maybe?
We don't have one in THIS city so....

Also, if you're doing a Luau, don't do the weakass one at the Polynesian Cultural Centre. Spend the money, and do the Royal Hawaiian's Luau. Very worth it for the difference.

Oh Lawson's at the Sheraton Waikiki sells homemade mochi ice cream using fresh fruit. Solid choice if by the beach.

Snap, everytime I get a notification, I remember something:
Eggs N' Things is a super awesome breakfast place serving waffles made with passionfruit and lilikoi in the batter - also in the jams. Get your fix, its super good and not-quite low key these days.

Marukame Udon is a great affordable place to go. The line moves fast so don’t be intimidated. Maui Brewing has a great happy hour and live music and the brunch is good.

Best Eats in Honolulu: A Local's Guide

Honolulu, the vibrant capital of Hawaii, is a food lover's paradise. From authentic Hawaiian cuisine to international flavors, this city offers a diverse culinary landscape that will tantalize your taste buds. As a local, I'm excited to share some of my favorite spots for good eats in Honolulu.

Hawaiian Classics

No visit to Honolulu is complete without indulging in traditional Hawaiian fare. One of my top recommendations is Highway Inn. This no-frills eatery serves up some of the best Hawaiian plate lunches, featuring classics like kalua pork, lau lau (steamed pork wrapped in taro leaves), and haupia (coconut pudding) for dessert.

Seafood Delights

With its prime location on the Pacific Ocean, Honolulu is a seafood lover's dream. Head to Town, a beloved restaurant known for its farm-to-table approach and exceptional seafood dishes. Their daily catch specials are a must-try, and their cocktails are equally impressive.

International Flavors

Honolulu's diverse cultural influences have given rise to an incredible array of international cuisines. For authentic Japanese fare, Morimoto is a top choice. This upscale restaurant, helmed by Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, offers innovative sushi, sashimi, and other Japanese delicacies.

If you're in the mood for Mexican cuisine, Truck Ya Haulin is a food truck you won't want to miss. Their mouth-watering tacos, burritos, and quesadillas are a local favorite, and their friendly service adds to the overall experience.

Sweet Treats

No food adventure in Honolulu is complete without indulging in some sweet treats. For an authentic Hawaiian shave ice experience, Matsumoto Shave Ice is a must-visit. This iconic spot has been serving up their signature shave ice (finely shaved ice topped with flavored syrups) since 1951.

Whether you're a local or a visitor, Honolulu's culinary scene is sure to delight. From traditional Hawaiian fare to international flavors, this city has something to satisfy every palate. Bon appétit!
