How Do I Get From Narita Airport to Kyoto by Train?

If you are looking to arrive at Kyoto on the same day then the Shinkansen (bullet train) is the only way to go. I am quite certain that if you take a regular train you won't make it same day from Tokyo/Narita. Otherwise you can look into buying a one way domestic flight from Narita to the Osaka area. I hear that there's a special deal if you buy it in advance before you enter Japan. I think it's about $100?

Thank you. I want to take / try the bullet train. But doesn't that leave from Tokyo or does it now go from narita? I'm flying in from the Philippines - how long will customs be at narita?
Thank you very much!!
Evelyn
You will have to take a train from Narita into Tokyo first (Shinagawa Station to be exact). If you have luggage I recommend taking the Narita express, it's faster and there's a luggage rack at the ends of the cars. From Narita to Shinagawa it's about an hour on the Narita express. Then from Shinagawa to Kyoto it's just over 2 hours. Customs in Narita usually is quite efficient but it does depend on whether there are other big flights flying in at the same time. Hope this helps!

Thx ?

I agree. You can by a shinkansan pass right at narita and a train goes straight to Kyoto
Elena
You can't buy the Shinkansen at Narita, you have to buy it before and exchange the voucher at Narita.

I don't recommend taking the train personally. I did Narita to osaka and it was not so easy.... After a 4 hr flight it was tough to carry luggage and change trains 5 times. I would recommend flight. I think it's cheaper too.

Getting from Narita Airport to Kyoto
If you're arriving at Narita Airport (NRT) and need to get to Kyoto, here are a few options for taking the train:
- Narita Express (N'EX)
- Keisei Skyliner
- JR Narita Express
The N'EX is a limited express train that runs from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station. From Tokyo Station, you can transfer to the Tokaido Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto. The total travel time is about 2 hours and 30 minutes, and the cost is around 7,800 yen.
The Keisei Skyliner is another limited express train that runs from Narita Airport to Nippori Station in Tokyo. From Nippori Station, you can transfer to the JR Yamanote Line to Shinagawa Station, and then transfer to the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto. The total travel time is about 2 hours and 45 minutes, and the cost is around 6,200 yen.
The JR Narita Express is a regular express train that runs from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station. From Tokyo Station, you can transfer to the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto. The total travel time is about 3 hours, and the cost is around 4,800 yen.
Tips:
- If you're traveling during peak hours, be sure to purchase your tickets in advance to avoid long lines.
- There are also several bus options available from Narita Airport to Kyoto. However, the train is generally the faster and more convenient option.
- If you're arriving on a Friday afternoon, be aware that the trains may be crowded. Consider taking an earlier or later train to avoid the crowds.
Have a great trip!
