To avoid any delays or inconvenience at the border, I suggest you bring the consent letter.
Francesc
It doesn't have to be notarized.
Meiling
You still need a consent letter
Sheila
Phone US Customs and find out from them exactly what you need. They do answer calls.
Carolyn
I always traveled with a letter from my husband-but never had to show it. Better to be on the safe side!
Josh
Having the letter makes everything significantly easier/quicker if you get an agent who is a bit over zealous. We have never been asked for a letter heading into the US but have been asked when coming back into Canada 2-3 times.
Susan
Take her skating at Rockefeller Ctr - that was a hilight for us and it would be stunning at Christmas time! You can rent skates right there in the pavilion.

This is what you need, no need to notarize, just witnessed. I don’t get asked every time but I wouldn’t risk travelling without as I’ve been asked for it at least 20 times. (answering from on a flight alone with kids)
Esther
Christmas light tour, they do Macy's and then go to Dykster park in Brooklyn, was so worth the time
Lily
Yes you need a travel consent letter. I also highly recommend bringing her birth certificate that lists your name and her father’s. I didn’t bring my daughter’s birth certificate one time and we were detained and questioned, even with showing the travel letter. They questioned my daughter away from me. She’s 13 and they are very serious about looking out for human trafficking these days. I travel alone with my daughter all the time
Mel
Lily you do not need it notarized. But should have the letter until the child is 16. The USA rarely asks for it. But us Canadian often do, by doing so, several abducted kids have been returned before the other parent even knew the kid was abducted. When detained you are read your rights. Being questioned is part of the regular border crossing process.

My son brought his sons to alberta this past summer from the states and just had his wife make a video on his phone with kids giving consent. They were driving not flying

LOVE THE CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR
also love Food Tours of NY

I’ve travelled with my
Child on my own. Never been asked for a letter. Last time I crossed the boarder my vehicle they did ask if her dad was aware we were out of the country and why he wasn’t with us. My boys used to go to Mexico with their grandparents a lot. We always got notarized letters. Never hurts and we didn’t want any issues for them while travelling. They were never asked for I will add.
Jan
I travelled with my nephew (5yo) to the US with a parent’s consent (no birth certificate). I was never asked for the document. We got similar features, the immigration officer assumed he is my son. Maybe it was just one of but it is better to have both documents, the consent and the birth certificate.
Stacy
The American Girl store is quite something to visit

Traveling to NYC with a Child: What You Need to Know
Ah, the magic of New York City during the holiday season! Your planned trip with your daughter and sister sounds like an exciting adventure. As for your question about crossing the border, here's what you need to know:
Notarized Letter Requirement
Since both you and your daughter hold Canadian and American passports, as well as NEXUS cards, you do not need a notarized letter from your husband for the trip. The NEXUS card serves as a trusted traveler program document, allowing you to cross the border more efficiently.
However, it's always a good idea to carry copies of your daughter's birth certificate or any other documentation that proves your relationship and your custody rights. This can help avoid any potential issues at the border.
Must-See Attractions in NYC
New York City offers an endless array of holiday festivities and iconic attractions. Since you already have tickets to the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular, here are some other must-see highlights:
- Rockefeller Center: Marvel at the stunning Christmas tree and go ice skating at the iconic rink.
- Holiday Window Displays: Stroll along Fifth Avenue and enjoy the mesmerizing holiday window displays at department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman.
- Bryant Park Winter Village: Explore the charming holiday shops, enjoy hot cocoa, and take a spin on the ice skating rink.
- Central Park: Rent a bike or take a horse-drawn carriage ride through this urban oasis.
- American Museum of Natural History: Discover the wonders of science and nature at this iconic museum.
- 9/11 Memorial & Museum: Pay your respects and learn about the events of September 11, 2001.
- High Line: Stroll along this elevated urban park and take in the unique views of the city.
Remember to bundle up and embrace the festive spirit that envelops New York City during the holiday season. Enjoy every moment with your daughter and sister!

I'm taking my daughter (7) to NYC right before Christmas and meeting my sister there for a girls trip.
She and I are both dual Canadian/American citizens/passport holders and we both have NEXUS cards. Do we still need a notarized letter from my husband since he won't be traveling with us across the border?
Also any MUST sees appreciated, our list is LONG. We already have tickets to the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular! Staying at Hyatt Centric Times Square.
