I live in Costa Rica! I can help you find your way. Been here for 28 years, off and on, mostly on. Been retired here for 12 years now.

Nel We we’re thinking about the Pacific side as I lived in Puerto Viejo 18 years ago and never saw the Pacific side.
My only concern is the weather.
We would like to go end of November but I’ve read the best time to go to the Pacific starts mid December.
What do you think? Would End of November still be ok weather wise?

Maartz Farm!! Tree house. Extras = horseback riding, trips to waterfalls. http://www.martzfarm.com/ River rafting, if kidniks are old enough. We also liked Caye Caulker; casual, barefoot, 'real' Belize.

San Ignacio is our favorite. Excellent base for cave tubing, ruins, zip lining etc.... Not touristy. Sanpopo cottages are excellent vacation rentals. We love Belize and are currently building a cabin there for retirement.

Veronica So it’s pretty safe then?

Mieke I consider San Ignacio very safe. Belize City less so. Use common sense, no problem.

Mieke we usually fly as not safe to drive at night especially if not familiar with road. Road is not well marked and several one-way bridges. Tropic and MAYA Island Air both fly there. If you choose to rent a car in BELIZE City, spend the night and drive during daylight. There is a hotel very close to airport for about $50. With airport shuttle. Not 5* but adequate. Private message if I can further help.

We rented a car and drove around Belize for three weeks last summer with our teenagers and had a great time. Never felt unsafe. We found the locals super friendly! If you have kids you might want to stay at the tropical education centre and visit the Belize Zoo. We also loved Placencia, San Ignacio and Caye Caulker. When we stayed in San Ignacio we did cave tubing, visited the Mayan ruins at Xunantunich and crossed the border into Guatemala for a few days to go to Tikal and Flores. Have a great time!

Susan Was it easy to cross the boarder into Guatemala?

Profile picture of Susan

Susan

Yes, but when you are renting your car you need to let them know that you might want to go to Guatemala. It is easy to do but you need to get the proper paperwork from the car rental company first to present at the Guatemalan border when you cross. We didn’t do that and had to have the car rental company courier us the forms. We rented from Crystal. They are the best and super helpful!
