Melly
I went for almost 3 weeks & that still wasn't enough time
Darrell
I can ask my friend who went but do remember he said alot of it was a waste - he went for 3 weeks
Vasile
It really depends on your budget. I did a 3 day trip out if Nairobi to the Masai Mara. Saw so many animals, up close and personal. I would have a longer time frame, but it was affordable and amazing.
Nancy
Spent 2 weeks in Kenya and Tanzania on safari and if someone suggested I could stay an additional 2 weeks I would have been in! Each day was more amazing than the last!
Kim
Nancy we did the same thing. Never got bored!
Thea
I did an 8 day self-driving safari in Kruger National Park and could have stayed for a month but that's just me. There's so much to see and you never know what animals will cross your path that day.
Shayna
We did an 8 day tour in Tanzania and I was never bored. There’s so much to see and different animals everyday. Plus the tours stop in at villages and points of interest to add to your day. The hotels were amazing too, with beautiful views and pools to relax at
Natalie
Shayna what was the name of the tour company ?
Caryl
I would be interested to know too.
Shayna
Natalie we booked through Rangers Safari`s and did the Simba package. They picked us up right from the tarmac and took care of us the entire time. We also added on a trip to Zanibar afterwards and went to an all inclusive (which is more european style than mexico all inclusive but still nice). I had some family members book through the same tour company this July and they loved it too. If you are looking at Kenya Rangers Safari`s has a sister company named Pollmans as well that my hustband has used and my family used. If you go to the villages though be prepared to be sold some over priced beading and handmade items. It`s neat to see but know ahead of time that the tour company pays them for the visits so don`t feel like you have to give more than you are comfortable with. I loved Tanzania though and hope to take our kids when they are young adults! https://www.rangersafaris.com

We did a safari lodge in Kruger for 4 full days which was definitely enough time!
Cathy
We went with a local, top rated South African company, Wild Wings Safaris which tailor it to your needs, budget and time frame. We spent 5 days in Kruger, then flew to both Zimbabwe and Botswana for two days each . I’d be very happy to do it all again. It’s my most memorable trip, and we travel for about 3 or 4 months each year.
Heather
Three weeks in Kenya - loved every minute. I took a guided tour-type safari in order to see almost every park there. Plus Mombasa beach time and Nairobi city time. Lots of variety as each park is known for something different. Loved. Every. Minute.
Aleyschi
Did 12 days and could have done 12 more.
Adam
More days is better
Cheryl
Do as many safari days as you can afford. I did 13 days total at three different locations in S Africa - never bored.
Kent
Jenn L something to follow
Carmen
Are you planning a tour or self drive? We did 3 full (close to 12 hour) self drive days in Kruger and a total of about 4 weeks in South Africa, followed by another month in Namibia with more self drive safari days and I would still do another safari.
Kara
Planning a tour not a self drive going with 2x15 year old boys. Total trip duration 3 weeks but we want to do lots of other things.
Ruth
Kruger national park is awesome. Get a guide to take you through. A less expensive option. There are also private safari parks bordering Kruger. Check out travel agents in Cape Town for a better rate.
Lindsay
We went to SA for 3 weeks. We spent 4 days in Kruger with a guided tour and we felt like it was enough/not too short
Feather
we did 5 days kruger-was perfect!
Errin
KwaMbili Game Lodge, @Thornybush Game Reserve...absolutely fabulous...stayed 3 days, and then did a self drive through Kruger National Park.
Kate
We did a guided 3 night 4 day safari in Tanzania and for us that was perfect. We saw all the animals we could’ve dreamed of and by the end we were ready to not be in a vehicle anymore.
Sharon
10 days in Tanzania - 2 nights at each stop so we weren't constantly unpacking and packing up again. It was fabulous and we were never bored. Since you are there, spend as much time as you can afford. We went to Zanzibar for 5 days after that. It was wonderful.
Louise
Sharon we did one week in Kenya and one week in Tanzania and like u we went to Zanzibar which was also so incredible. So much car travelling to the next Park ( sometimes 6hrs+)and the roads aren’t great I would recommend flying between each safari ...of course depending on distance
Sharon
Louise and budget! The only time it seemed really long was heading to the central serengeti from ngorongo. It was hot and soooooo dusty but we did see Olduvai gorge so it was worth it.
Sharon
Ngorongoro- hate spell check sometimes
Marshal
Sharon consider Botswana with Natural Habitat. I’m currently finishing the 12 day secluded Botswana Safari and it’s the best
Nancy
Louise I loved the drives between parks. I thought it allowed a little peek into the real Africa, and the people’s lives. Some drives were a little long, but I wouldn’t have traded them for anything.

The Ideal Length for a South African Safari
When it comes to planning a safari adventure in South Africa, deciding on the perfect duration can be a bit of a challenge. You want to make the most of your experience without feeling overwhelmed or bored. Based on my research and personal experiences, I would recommend a safari length of 4 to 7 days for an optimal experience.
Why 4-7 Days?
A safari of 4-7 days offers a nice balance between immersion and variety. Here's why this range is often considered ideal:
- Accommodation and Relaxation: Most safari lodges and camps offer packages in 3, 4, or 7-day increments. This allows you to settle in, enjoy the amenities, and truly unwind in your surroundings.
- Game Drive Variety: By spending 4-7 days on a safari, you'll have the opportunity to explore different areas and habitats within the reserve or national park. This increases your chances of spotting a diverse range of wildlife and experiencing different landscapes.
- Memorable Encounters: While you may be lucky enough to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo) within the first few days, spending a bit more time in the bush increases the likelihood of witnessing special moments and behaviors that can create lasting memories.
Tailoring Your Experience
Of course, the ideal length may vary depending on your personal preferences, budget, and travel goals. Here are a few factors to consider:
- Multi-Destination Trips: If you're planning to visit other destinations in South Africa or neighboring countries, a shorter safari of 3-4 days may be more suitable to fit into your itinerary.
- Budget Constraints: Longer safaris can be more expensive, so if you're working with a limited budget, a shorter 3-4 day safari may be a better option.
- Intense Wildlife Enthusiasts: If you're a true wildlife enthusiast and can't get enough of the bush, you may want to consider extending your stay to 7-10 days or even longer to maximize your chances of incredible sightings and experiences.
Ultimately, the perfect safari length depends on your personal preferences, travel style, and expectations. Whether you opt for a 4-day or 7-day adventure, South Africa's stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife are sure to leave you with unforgettable memories.

Looking at South Africa, more curious though about the optimum length for a safari. Don’t want it to be too short but also don’t want to be bored with the same thing everyday. I was thinking 3-4 days but I don’t know.
Any advice
