Is Cancun Safe for Tourists Right Now?

Question:

Profile picture of Rima

Hello..anyone went to cancun lately? I would like to know how the situation is for tourists!

Humans say...

We leave Sunday! Curious to know as well!

Dan please let me know after as we are planning a trip and we don’t know how the situation is, thanks!

Profile picture of Michelle

Rima Me too! I got flights for 2 weeks end of November and don’t know much of the situation.

Profile picture of Lynn

Lynn

Dan there are lots of You Tube videos mainly by Americans who are travelling to Cancun during COVID. I watch every one of them with interest. The hotels seem to be doing a great job with safety precautions but the tourists are not wearing masks and gathering in groups which is odd to see given the strict rules in Canada.

Profile picture of Krystal

Krystal

Lynn America's pay for their own healthcare the government doesn't care if they get sick because hospitals make money from it. In Canada it costs $ from the government budgets to pay for sick people.

Profile picture of Lynn

Lynn

Krystal good point and this will certainly cost Canadian taxpayers plenty!

Profile picture of Stephen

Stephen

Your usual Covid precautions, no different than anywhere else.

Profile picture of Janet

Janet

Stephen actually very different than here. I just got back on Friday

Profile picture of Stephen

Stephen

Janet so did I. Nor much different lol.

Profile picture of Janet

Janet

Stephen then you live in a different world than the rest of us

Profile picture of Stephen

Stephen

Janet so what's so different...?

Profile picture of Janet

Janet

Stephen not a single hotel chain in Canada has protocols anywhere near what's happening in MX. No covidiots in MX, every single MX we saw was masked properly, even small children. Not the case here in Canada. Outdoor use of masks very normal in MX, not here. That's just for starters...

Profile picture of Stephen

Stephen

Janet resorts suck right now, I don't stay in them, I do beach front condos with rooftop pools for a third the price, pretty normal in them. I saw plenty of Mexicans and tourists in PLC not wearing masks or not wearing them properly, more than here.

Profile picture of Janet

Janet

Stephen if you say so... Not our experience. We have done villas in Playacar before but not this trip. It's been too fucking hard of a year to not enjoy some luxury. We don't do cheap travel, we're too old and boujee for that anymore

Profile picture of Stephen

Stephen

Janet half million dollar condo with a million dollar view, I don't travel cheap, I travel smart.

Janet the MX people and businesses look to be taking it very seriously. I wish the tourists I see on the videos about travelling during COVID would do the same.

Just got back on Fri. Expect full flights to start with. Honestly, MX isn't screwing around with Covid. Our resort is super clean and vigilant. You arrive and luggage stays outside till disinfected and then it goes straight to room. You walk through a disinfecting tray when entering any building, off resort as well. In the lobby is a temp checking machine that records your temp and you're asked to use it daily. Rooms are disinfected with a fogging bomb then sealed with a door seal till you open it. Soft surfaces are disinfected with a steamer. On resort masks are required at restaurants and buffets. They ask you wear them in other public spaces indoors but not required. Most did. Sanitizer everywhere and mandatory in lots of spaces. Constant cleaning of high touch areas as well.
We went into Playa del Carmen, again not screwing around. I would say 90 % were wearing masks outdoors (it's law in MX btw in the orange stoplight, yellow is optional). Stores all were doing temp checks and disinfecting mats. Sanitizer everywhere!
I'm in Niagara Falls and felt way safer in MX than here at home. NF is packed every weekend with covidiots from hotspots. To put it in perspective, I'm also immune suppressed and never felt like I was at risk.

Profile picture of Shirley

Shirley

Janet buffets? I thought those were a thing of the past?!!

Profile picture of Janet

Janet

Shirley as buffets use to be, yes. The current version is staff serves everything. Lots of stuff is now pre-plated as well. Some very inovatively! Think salads in little mason jars. Masks are required while not seated at your socially distanced table as well

Profile picture of Janet

Janet

Shirley we were at Iberostar Paraiso complex. Our reservation was for the Beach resort, they upgraded us to Maya as Beach isn't open, and we decided to upgrade further to the adult only Grand. We spent lots of time at Maya though.

Profile picture of Jenn

Janet are beaches not open in general in Mexico?

Profile picture of Janet

On the Iberostar Paraiso resort there's a resort called Iberostar Beach.

Profile picture of Janet

Profile picture of Janet

Janet

Anades Weir-McPherson and you do realize there are no social programs in MX right? Every friend we have in MX, every staff member is so grateful to be back at work. They've depleted most of the savings they had and NEED to work. If they don't work they'll be homeless and hungry. There's no CERB and the monthly food hampers were a joke and stopped a while ago. There are no families wandering Playa begging. Seniors sitting on curbs weaving palm baskets. The Mayan communities are exceptionally hard hit and in crisis. $$$$ is what's needed and like it or not, that means tourism and hospitality

Profile picture of Silvio

Lili yup!

Profile picture of Janet

Janet

Lili if you're thinking of a particular, fav place check first. There are reputable reports of some shutdown for non-covid precaution compliance. There's one resort not serving alcohol as well without food. They are blaming it on 'new' Covid regulations which is bs. It's they didn't renew their bar liquor license

Profile picture of Janet

Janet

Oh and the federales are on the job. As we were there Halloween and Day of the Dead, they were shutting down any bars with large crowds. In some cases, senor frogs, they made them stop serving alcohol without food. Covid regulations are taken really seriously

Just be careful. It is extremely difficult to get travel insurance coverage right now. If you do it will not cover you if you get covid. I know also my employers insurance has said that they will not cover me if I travel either. But if you want to gamble, go ahead

Profile picture of David

David

Laura yea it will cover you.

Profile picture of David

David

You have to get separate coverage outside of group benefits.

Profile picture of Bal

Bal

David I saw sunwing offering free COVID 19 coverage up to $200,000.00. I am not sure if this is true?

Profile picture of David

David

Bal yeah a lot of companies are. I am a broker and listened to a webinar put on by manulife today and was very impressed with the coverage. Even if you start getting symptoms on the way and the country won’t let you in the company will reimburse. Not all coverages are equal. Sun wing is a travel company so I would be a little cautious.

Profile picture of Lori

Lori

David Oh. Yiu Sure about that? Got different information last March from the Snow bird association. Wonder

Profile picture of David

David

Lori they actually talked about snow birds and the coverage that was available. As always you have to be careful with pre-existing conditions

Profile picture of Grace

Laura air transat vacations says that they will cover you for covid.

Profile picture of Brenda

Brenda

Kathy that does not include any thing else very limited.

Profile picture of David

David

manulife has trip interruption would I think to be important.

Profile picture of Laura

Laura

David how much for that coverage?

Profile picture of David

David

Laura depends on age but roughly $56 per person per week. A little cheaper for younger and a little more for over 55. This is not taking into consideration any pre existing conditions.

Profile picture of Kathy

Kathy

Brenda Well that's why you get your normal coverage and then they are adding that peace of mind if your policy doesn't cover covid.

Profile picture of Janet

Janet

Kathy exactly! Many resort chains are offering coverage as well for Covid but no way in hell it should be anyone's primary coverage. Our chains policy is 40,000euros medical but the most useful part is fully covering ones expenses if qurantined or travel partner/family gets Covid.

Medipac (who is Snowbird Assoc official company) and Blue Cross have both been offering Covid covering policies since July! We bought a yearly policy from Blue Cross with $5mil coverage for $150 for both of us over age 50 with preexisting coverage
There are a handful of other companies as well, most well known in the nomad/backpacker circles.
Oh and our extended benefits out if country absolutely does cover us, including Covid. We are with manulife

Profile picture of Chris

Chris

Between March and June it was nearly impossible to find medical coverage for COVD-19. Most insurance companies were telling people 'due to the current travel advisory in place, coverage for covid is not available.'
But then around July we started to see market forces at work, and a couple of insurance companies started to offer coverage for covid, even while the Canadian government recommendation not to travel was still in place.
That got the ball rolling, and there are now 13 insurance companies offering medical coverage for covid-19 (see below).
Certain countries (Dominican Republic, Jamaica), airlines (air canada, westjet, air transat, sunwing, Emirates, Etihad, Virgin Atlantic), and vacation package operators (air canada vacations, westjet vacations, sunwing Vacations, Transat Vacations) are also starting to include covid-19 insurance for free.

I’m in Cancun right now and having a blast. However people tend to leave the masks behind shortly after arriving. So you need to police yourself and social distance. I don’t recommend going out to clubs etc while they are at limited capacity And staff are good about masks etc tourists start partying and forget, plus it’s also very hot and humid so hardly anyone is compliant. It’s still fairly empty so you can keep your distance and enjoy the weather

Profile picture of Jenn

Jenn

Maria thanks! What about on the resorts? I wouldn’t be leaving the resort so I’m wondering what’s it like.

Profile picture of Maria

Maria

Jennifer Bouyoukos I find people stop wearing their masks on the resort shortly after they arrive. Staff take temps everytime before entering the restaurants/dining rooms. The buffets are open and staff serve you (instead of tourists touching all the serving utensils. Be mindful of keeping distance during the nightly entertainment... once people have a few drinks they all seem to forget we’re still in the middle of a pandemic.
