Hi all! I'm looking to go to Tokyo Japan in mid January 2016 for a conference there. Looking to stay for around or a little over a week. We plan on taking the train to the other cities outside of Tokyo for a bit of sightseeing while we are there. Does anyone have any suggestions on when is the best time to look at the flights? As well as any suggestions on accommodations will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Lucky you! Try to stay at a Ryokan (guest house) while you are travelling. They are wonderful. There are some in Tokyo. There is a huge price range, from really inexpensive and basic (sharing bathrooms) to luxury. If you are the kind of person who requires a name brand hotel, be prepared to pay. I have stayed in all kinds of Japanese hotels and have always found them comfortable and clean. I highly recommend travelling to the west coast - Kanazawa or to the mountains—Nagano or Matsumoto. Kyoto, too of course. Investigate how much train travel you'll do, to figure out if a JR pass is a good idea. It can save money.

Kanazawa is a great recommendation it's outside the tourist attractions. Find a business man hotel by far the cheapest you'll find but very basic. Or try a capsule Inn best sleep I had on my trip. There are also lots of hostels that feels like a ryokan

There is a hotel very near Kanazawa station that was newly opened in fall 2006. It has an onsen on the rooftop. Basic accommodation, very convenient with something special if you know.

The nicest hotel room I've ever seen was at the FourSeasons Hotel in Kyoto (our friends invited us to see their room). I might stay there if I had $$$$$.

I have stayed at this ryokan in Tokyo. It's easy enough to find and to access by subway: http://shigetsu.com/e/

Planning a Trip to Tokyo in January 2016

Hi there! You've come to the right place for planning your trip to Tokyo in mid-January 2016. As someone who has visited Japan multiple times, I'm happy to share some tips and recommendations for making the most of your stay.

When to Book Flights

For international flights, it's generally recommended to book your tickets around 3-6 months in advance to get the best deals. However, for a trip in mid-January, you may still be able to find reasonable fares even if you book a bit later. Keep an eye on travel deal websites and airline promotions to snag a good deal.

Accommodations in Tokyo

Tokyo has a wide range of accommodation options to suit different budgets and preferences. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Hotels: Tokyo has numerous hotels, from luxury properties to budget-friendly options. Some popular areas for hotels include Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ginza.
  • Ryokans: For a traditional Japanese experience, consider staying in a ryokan (traditional inn). These often feature tatami mat rooms, hot springs, and Japanese-style meals.
  • Capsule Hotels: If you're on a tight budget, capsule hotels offer a unique and affordable option. These feature small, capsule-like sleeping pods, often with shared facilities.
  • Airbnb: Renting an apartment or room through Airbnb can be a great way to experience living like a local and save some money.

Sightseeing Outside Tokyo

Japan's efficient rail system makes it easy to take day trips or short excursions from Tokyo. Some popular destinations within a few hours' train ride include:

  • Mount Fuji: Take in the iconic views of Japan's highest mountain, either from nearby towns like Kawaguchiko or by hiking part of the trail.
  • Nikko: This historic town is home to stunning shrines, temples, and natural scenery, including the famous Shinkyo Bridge.
  • Kamakura: Visit the Great Buddha statue and explore the numerous temples and shrines in this coastal city.
  • Hakone: Relax in the hot springs and enjoy the natural beauty of this mountainous region, known for its views of Mount Fuji.

I hope these tips help you plan an amazing trip to Tokyo and beyond! Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any other questions.
