Going to Japan in April. My friends daughter speaks some Japanese. Looking for recommendations for a central base to rent a Vbro and explore from there. Only going to spend a few days in Tokyo. Thinking Kyoto area?

I ended up doing a loop around part of the country so that I could see different areas more easily. Couple days in a couple of places and then a longer stretch in Kyoto with a day trip to Nara.

Kyoto is a great base area, we rented an airbnb traditional style Japanese house - plenty of room for 4. We only stayed a few days in Kyoto but could have spent a week there.

Namameguro is the best part of the city to stay in, especially in April during the cherry blossoms. It’s right in the river and connected well with the Meguro metro line

<p>Exploring Japan in April: A Central Base Beyond Tokyo

Exploring Japan in April: A Central Base Beyond Tokyo

Japan is a mesmerizing country with a rich culture, stunning landscapes, and an abundance of attractions. If you're planning a trip in April and only have a few days to spend in Tokyo, consider establishing a central base in the Kyoto area to explore the region's many wonders. With your friend's daughter's knowledge of Japanese, navigating and immersing yourself in the local culture will be even more rewarding.

Why Kyoto?

Kyoto, the former imperial capital of Japan, is a city steeped in history and tradition. From breathtaking temples and shrines to ancient gardens and preserved neighborhoods, Kyoto offers a glimpse into the country's cultural heritage. Here are a few reasons why Kyoto makes an excellent base for your exploration:

  • Proximity to numerous historical sites and UNESCO World Heritage sites
  • Easy access to other nearby cities like Nara, Osaka, and Himeji
  • Vibrant food scene with countless opportunities to savor authentic Japanese cuisine
  • Well-connected transportation system, including trains and buses

Accommodation Options

Renting a vacation rental or a VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) in the Kyoto area can provide you with a comfortable home base and a more immersive experience. Here are a few areas to consider for your accommodation:

Central Kyoto

Staying in central Kyoto, such as the Gion or Kawaramachi districts, puts you within walking distance of many iconic attractions like Kiyomizudera Temple, Nijo Castle, and the preserved Gion geisha district. This area offers a mix of traditional and modern amenities.

Arashiyama

Arashiyama is a picturesque district on the western outskirts of Kyoto, known for its bamboo groves, scenic walking trails, and the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge. This area provides a more tranquil escape while still being accessible to the city center.

Fushimi

The Fushimi district, famous for the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine with its thousands of vermilion torii gates, offers a unique blend of traditional and modern attractions. It's also conveniently located near Nara, another must-visit destination.

Whichever area you choose, make sure to research and book your accommodation in advance, as Kyoto is a popular destination, especially during the spring season.

Exploring Beyond Kyoto

While Kyoto itself offers an abundance of attractions, its central location also makes it an ideal base for day trips to other nearby destinations. Consider exploring:

  • Nara: Home to the famous Nara Park, where you can encounter friendly deer, and the impressive Todaiji Temple with its enormous Buddha statue.
  • Osaka: A vibrant city known for its fantastic street
