Sorry, I don't have many ideas at this time, since I've been out of the events loop for a year of travel, but I have to like this post for your fire reference!
There's the Interior Provincial Exhibition in Vernon over the Labour Day weekend, if you're heading in that direction. I don't think that area's on fire (yet).

Depending on how many days you have. Starting point? I'll say coming out of Vancouver drive up through Whistler to Lillooet. Lillooet to Hat Creek Ranch. North on highway 97 to Clinton. Drive through to Echo Valley Ranch spend a day or two there. Horseback riding. Continue north to 100 Mile House. Turn onto highway 24. Travel through to Lac De Roche Resort & spend a night or two there by the lake (they have cabins & electricity). Travel through to highway 5. Turn onto highway 5 & drive over to sun peaks and spend a night or 2 there... Various activities and if on the weekend - they have something planned every weekend. Along with hiking, and a new atv type thing. Spas. And finish off with driving to Kamloops and either spend a night there at hotel in Aberdeen and a lot to do here... Shopping, movies, music in the park, casinos. And get onto coquihalla and back to Vancouver. Could be as long as you want - a week or longer!! Note: Echo Valley is expensive depends on which day of the week.

Oregon coast.
We just did a week road trip from Vancouver down to San Francisco and back. Did Seattle, Portland, six flags, San Fran and the Oregon coast. Highly recommend it!

The Island is wonderful! Drive out to the West Coast for a couple days- the weather here has been spectacular. No fire bans right now, but that could change. Then explore the Island Highway up to the north end and down to Victoria, finishing in the city and see the Butchart Gardens- awesome! Ferry back via Victoria

We go to the Oregon coast quite a bit due to our friends living out there. Beautiful country. We are thinking of the Island as well. Have not done in a couple of years and maybe all the way to Tofino. Have family in Victoria where we can stay a couple of nights.

The Dry Falls and Grand Coulée Dam in Washington State are interesting. They have a laser light show on the dam that is amazing.

If you like an outdoorsy trip (hiking biking, possible camping), Cascades National Park and the Methow Valley in Washington State are fantastic. You can do an out and back trip, or do a loop drive (the Cascade Loop). To get there, take Highway 20 east from Mount Vernon through the Cascades National Park (several viewpoints, camping options and hiking trails - Cutthroat Pass is a classic), stop in Mazama with its cute and well-stocked general store with a bakery/deli and beer on tap Fridays and Saturdays. Spend some time in the appealing little Western themed town of Winthrop with shopping and cafes. Check out Sun Mountain with great hiking and biking trails, and a gorgeous lodge with fantastic views. Camp and/or swim at lovely Pearrygin Lake. Drive down to the little town of Twisp, along the Methow River and stop along the way for a dip (or, spend a day and float down the Methow river). More hiking and biking await, and a few good restaurants. Past Twisp (which is as far as we went), you can go to Lake Chelan and Leavenworth and Wenatchee, and loop back west towards Seattle. All the info you could need you can find here: http://cascadeloop.com. It's only 4 hours drive from Vancouver to Winthrop - or 5 hours with a stop at Trader Joe's for supplies

Sounds awesome Susan. Heard something about a fire by Cascade Mountains, so will check into it. Had Leavenworth in mind till I saw a story with a town by there burning down due to forest fires.

After I wrote that I watched the news and yeah, there are a lot of fires in the area currently
So perhaps a trip for another time!

Thanks so much Susan. It is sad that the forest fires are taking over this summer. Great idea though.
