We made the same trip in April of this year. We researched bus options but in the end decided on the water taxi from Chetumal to Ambergris Caye. This post explains the process quite accurately and we found the whole trip to be fairly pleasant.

You're welcome. Travel safe & enjoy!

Several years back we researched the same (opposite direction) and opted for the water taxi.

I did the reverse trip from Belize City to Cancún. It was pretty straightforward but it was in 2013 and I don't remember it super well. I think we switched buses at the border but same ticket.

Super easy and straightforward. You can take a water taxi right from Chetumal to Caye Caulker to skip the land border.

Avoid Guatemala.

Traveling from Cancun to Belize by Bus
Traveling from Cancun to Belize by bus is a popular option for budget-conscious travelers looking to explore the region. While it may not be the most luxurious mode of transportation, it can be a great way to see the countryside and experience local culture along the way.
Bus Tips
When traveling by bus from Cancun to Belize, it's important to pack light and bring snacks and water for the journey. The buses can be crowded and may not have amenities like air conditioning, so be prepared for a potentially uncomfortable ride. It's also a good idea to bring a book or some entertainment to pass the time.
Border Crossing
When crossing the border from Mexico to Belize, be prepared for a potentially long wait. Make sure to have all necessary documents, including your passport and any visas, ready for inspection. It's also a good idea to have some cash on hand for any border fees that may be required.
Ferry to Ambergris Caye
Once you arrive in Belize, you'll need to take a ferry to reach Ambergris Caye. The ferry ride is typically around 1.5-2 hours long and offers beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea. Make sure to book your ferry tickets in advance to ensure a spot on the boat.
Accommodations in Ambergris Caye
When staying in Ambergris Caye, there are plenty of accommodation options to choose from. Whether you're looking for a luxury resort or a budget-friendly guesthouse, you'll find something to suit your needs. Make sure to book your accommodations in advance, especially during peak tourist season.
Overall, traveling from Cancun to Belize by bus can be a rewarding experience for those willing to embrace the adventure. Just be prepared for some bumps along the way and enjoy the journey!
