It will take you years to accumulate. Mini round the world could be possible. Depends on what your goals are

What I was thinking of was to book the cheapest fare and using the points from that airline to upgrade future flights on the same trip. I don't mind economy on short segments, but it would be nice to be able to upgrade for the trans oceanic flights. For example if you flew east to west across North America, then used the accumulated points to upgrade your flight across the Pacific. This makes more sense to me than to finish the trip with a huge amount of points.

Round The World Tickets: Maximizing Your Points and Miles

Round the world (RTW) tickets are a unique and exciting way to explore multiple destinations on a single journey. These tickets offer flexibility, convenience, and often cost savings compared to booking individual flights. However, maximizing the value of your points and miles can be a bit tricky when it comes to RTW tickets.

Using Frequent Flyer Points for RTW Tickets

In the past, it was possible to use frequent flyer points from the first segment of an RTW ticket to upgrade the longer segments. This strategy allowed travelers to stretch their points and enjoy premium cabin experiences for a fraction of the cost. However, many airlines have changed their policies and no longer permit this practice.

Nowadays, most airlines require you to redeem points or miles for the entire RTW ticket, including all segments. While this may seem less advantageous, it can still be a worthwhile option if you have a substantial stash of points or miles. The key is to compare the costs of using points versus paying cash and determine which option provides the best value for your specific itinerary.

Using Credit Card Points for RTW Tickets

Another strategy to consider is using credit card points or rewards to book your RTW ticket. Many travel credit cards offer flexible rewards programs that allow you to redeem points for flights, hotels, and other travel expenses. This can be an excellent option if you don't have enough frequent flyer miles or if using credit card points provides better value.

When redeeming credit card points for RTW tickets, it's essential to understand the specific redemption rates and rules of your credit card program. Some programs offer better value for certain airlines or travel partners, while others may have more flexible redemption options for RTW tickets.

Additionally, consider any potential fees or surcharges associated with using credit card points for RTW tickets. These fees can sometimes offset the value of using points, so it's crucial to do the math and compare the total costs.

Maximizing Value: Strategies and Tips

To maximize the value of your points and miles for RTW tickets, consider the following strategies:

  • Book well in advance to secure the best availability and pricing.
  • Be flexible with your travel dates and routes to find the best deals.
  • Consider using a combination of frequent flyer miles and credit card points for different segments of your RTW journey.
  • Explore different airline alliances and partners to find the most favorable redemption rates.
  • Consider using a travel agent or booking service specializing in RTW tickets, as they may have access to better rates and deals.

Ultimately, the best approach for using points and miles for RTW tickets will depend on your specific travel goals, points balances, and flexibility. With careful planning and research, you can potentially save thousands of dollars and enjoy an incredible around-the-world adventure.
