Karako in Kyoto has AMAZING karage and a sweet ramen/karage meal deal (like $8 for a huge plate of both). We were staying in an airbnb around the corner from this place and literally went 3 times because it was so good XD

You have to eat your way through Kuromon market in Osaka and Nishiki market in Kyoto.
Make sure to buy strawberries from a vendor. Trust me.... you’ve never tasted a strawberry until you do.

Brunch at the New York Grill, Park Hyatt in Shinjuku. The BEST! (And where they filmed lost in translation.) Look up kushi-age and find a highly recommended restaurant. And teppanyaki (ANA hotel and Okura both used to have great offerings, although this is not cheap.) Generally, cheap to expensive, food is ALL good in Japan, so you really can't go too wrong.

https://www.parkhyatttokyo.com/.../Menu/NYG_WeekdayLunch.pdf Believe lunch is offered everyday. JPY 5,500 is a really good price for what you get.

Awesome list

There is a nice back street behind shijo-dori in kyoto, the main shopping street. It starts at Shijo-omiya, with a morning market, and goes to restaurants at the other end.

Don’t forget ichiran ramen. Try the fuji apples, it’s really different in ours.

Must-Try Places to Eat in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka
If you're planning a trip to Japan in May, you're in for a culinary adventure! Japan is renowned for its diverse and delicious cuisine, and the cities of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka offer a wealth of must-try dining experiences. Here are some top recommendations for each city:
Tokyo
Tsukiji Fish Market
: This iconic market is a seafood lover's paradise. Try the incredible sushi from one of the small eateries within the market, or visit the nearby Tsukiji Honganji Temple for a traditional sushi breakfast.
Ramen Alley (Ramen Yokocho)
: Located in the Shinjuku area, this narrow alley is packed with tiny ramen shops serving up steaming bowls of delicious ramen. It's the perfect spot to sample different regional ramen styles.
Genki Sushi
: For a unique dining experience, visit this popular chain of sushi restaurants where the sushi is delivered to your table via a conveyor belt system. It's a fun and affordable way to try a variety of sushi.
Kyoto
Nishiki Market
: Known as "Kyoto's Kitchen," this lively market is a must-visit for foodies. Explore the narrow alleys lined with vendors selling everything from fresh produce to traditional sweets and snacks.
Kaiseki Ryori
: Kyoto is famous for its kaiseki ryori, a traditional multi-course dining experience featuring seasonal, beautifully presented dishes. Try this at a renowned restaurant like Kyokaori or Gion Maruyama.
Tofu Restaurants
: Kyoto is known for its high-quality tofu. Head to a tofu restaurant like Shoraian or Okutan to sample delicious tofu dishes and desserts.
Osaka
Dotonbori Street
: This iconic street is a foodie's paradise, lined with restaurants, street food stalls, and famous landmarks like the Glico Running Man sign. Try okonomiyaki (savory pancakes), takoyaki (octopus balls), and kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers).
Kuromon Ichiba Market
: This lively covered market is a great place to sample local street food and snacks like fresh seafood, grilled meat skewers, and fried treats.
Kitsune Udon
: Osaka is known for its delicious udon noodles. Try the signature kitsune udon (thick noodles in hot broth topped with a deep-fried tofu pouch) at a traditional restaurant like Shukunatsu or Yamachan.
No matter where you dine in these cities, you're sure to experience the incredible flavors, attention to detail, and rich culinary traditions that make Japanese cuisine so special. Bon appétit!
