Will be going to Japan in April-May, and I want to go to Hakone for 1-2 nights. I was wondering if anyone knows of ryokans with private baths, and ones that permit tattoos??

We stayed at Ichinoyu Honkan in Hakone for a night. Our room had a private outdoor bath. As long as you don’t show your tattoos you should be ok.

We stayed at Ryokan Fukuzumiro in Hakone. It's right next to the river our room overlooked to river. Very large 2 rooms plus enclosed balcony cuts down the water sound. Costs over $400 cad which includes dinner and breakfast served in your room. One of the best Japanese meals we've ever had. Courses after courses they keep bringing more food. Breakfast you have a choice of Japanese or Western. We had one of each. The onsen they have one for men one for women and another family. We took the family as I have tattoos as well. Water is a natural hot spring so hot you can cook with it so they have a hose with cold water to cool it down.

Tattoo-Friendly Ryokans with Private Baths in Hakone, Japan

Hakone, a picturesque town in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, is a popular destination for those seeking a traditional Japanese experience. With its natural hot springs, stunning mountain scenery, and rich cultural heritage, it's an ideal place to stay in a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) and soak in the relaxing atmosphere.

If you're planning a trip to Hakone in April-May and have tattoos, finding a ryokan that permits tattoos and offers private baths can be a challenge. However, we've done the research and compiled a list of ryokans that meet both requirements.

Ryokans with Private Baths and Tattoo-Friendly Policies

  • Fukudaya

Fukudaya is a well-known ryokan in Hakone that welcomes guests with tattoos. They offer private open-air baths made of cypress wood, providing a serene and natural bathing experience. The ryokan also has a traditional Japanese garden and serves delicious kaiseki cuisine.

  • Gora Kadan

Gora Kadan is a luxury ryokan that embraces a modern twist on traditional Japanese hospitality. They have a tattoo-friendly policy and offer private indoor and outdoor baths in select guest rooms. The ryokan is known for its impeccable service and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

  • Tenzan Onsen Somasan

The ryokan's minimalist design and serene ambiance create a perfect environment for relaxation. Guests can also enjoy kaiseki cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients.

When booking your stay, it's always a good idea to confirm the ryokan's tattoo policy and availability of private baths. Additionally, be mindful of cultural etiquette and cover up any visible tattoos in public areas of the ryokan, if requested.

Enjoy your time in Hakone and immerse yourself in the unique experience of staying in a traditional ryokan with private baths, while embracing the beauty of Japanese hospitality and culture.
