It’s very easy to get around. Consider staying south of Cancun or planning to take the bus - Playa del Carmen, Tulum areas are easy by bus.

Cancun is a horrible tourist trap. Stay in Playa del Carmen or at any of the resorts north of the town. Have fun!!

If you stay at the Moon Palace you won't have to leave the resort.

Do you plan to enjoy an all inclusive or is the hotel just a place to sleep? If it is the latter, just stay in downtown Cancun. Way cheaper and super easy to get around on the bus.

Marie Amaro this is our first time to Mexico, but I think we want all inclusive yet affordable.

I know most of Cancun and Riveria were having a seriously bad issue with seaweed.... Not sure of this is still the case but worth looking into if you're a beach/ocean person

Robyn It was horrible at Moon Palace last year. No one swam, and they were trolling the beach several times a day. Stunk badly. Won’t go back to that side til it’s better

If you like to venture easily off resort the cancun hot zone or playa del carmen right in the town is your best bet.
Playa you are closer to the big excursions like xcaret, xel ha etc.
The riviera has had a seaweed issue but it has cleared up significantly to basically none at all.
Hotel Xcaret is a great resort for someone who wants to check out all the "X" parks as it includes admission, transportation and food and drinks at all the parks but 1. Its on the pricier side but when you consider free access to the parks it's a smoking deal

Agreed - Cancun very commercialized but everyone has to try it once. Recommend to stay in hotels nearer the south end of Boulevard Kukulcan (eg. where Club Med is). Then you have option (when tide is out) to walk almost whole length of beach up towards the northerly end, and veer off on way to shops , restaurants. Some grander hotels to north but their beachfronts seemed windier. You can walk or a bus travels down that boulevard which will take you up to the (same old) outlet shops, and around the corner into the city. Bus also takes you easily to Para-sailing options etc. Do book the Dueling ships evening dinner and show.

Where to Stay in Cancun for an Active Vacation

Cancun, the vibrant Mexican city on the Yucatan Peninsula, is a popular destination for its stunning beaches, turquoise waters, and endless opportunities for adventure. If you're planning an active vacation with your husband in January, here are some great areas to consider for your stay:

Hotel Zone

The Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) is a long stretch of pristine beaches lined with all-inclusive resorts, hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues. This area is ideal for those who want to be in the heart of the action and have easy access to various water sports, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and parasailing.

Many resorts in the Hotel Zone offer fitness centers, beachfront activities, and organized excursions to nearby attractions like Isla Mujeres and Xcaret Park. Some top-rated resorts in this area include:

  • Secrets The Vine Cancun
  • Paradisus Cancun
  • Hyatt Ziva Cancun

Playa Mujeres

If you're looking for a more secluded and peaceful atmosphere, consider staying in Playa Mujeres, located just north of the Hotel Zone. This area is known for its tranquil beaches, luxury resorts, and proximity to various eco-adventures, like swimming with whale sharks or exploring cenotes (natural sinkholes).

Many resorts in Playa Mujeres offer world-class spas, golf courses, and water sports facilities. Some recommended options include:

  • Finest Playa Mujeres
  • Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort
  • Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa

Downtown Cancun

For a more authentic Mexican experience, you could stay in downtown Cancun (El Centro). This area is bustling with local markets, restaurants, and cultural attractions, allowing you to immerse yourself in the region's rich history and traditions.

While downtown Cancun is not directly on the beach, it's a short drive or bus ride away from the Hotel Zone. You'll also have easy access to various outdoor activities, such as exploring the nearby Mayan ruins of El Rey or taking a day trip to the beautiful Isla Mujeres.

Regardless of where you choose to stay, Cancun offers a wealth of opportunities for an active and memorable vacation with your husband. Be sure to pack your sense of adventure and get ready to experience the best of this tropical paradise.
