Help! My 12 year old daughter sliced her leg open yesterday and we are suppose to go Italy in a week. We hope her stitches will be healed and we can take them out before we leave or we will have to find a doctor there to do it. She will be able to walk but probably it will be sore. We can not postpone or the cancel the trip but dont know how she will manage (itinerary was to rent a car and spend 4 days in verona/venice, 2 days rome and 4 days genoa). Anyone have experience n… See more

And you can prob take stitches out yourself if not ready before you go. It's really easy.

Has anyone tried to reschedule west jet (our flight to London) or easyjet flights (flight to milan from london), just in case

I have showed up at the airport for my flight in some health distress and they rescheduled my flight for me for free while I sought medical help. (westjet). I would say you're out of luck with easyjet...

Ask your dr for advice. My son just did the same 2 weeks ago now. Was told to NOT get it wet at all until the stitches dissolve and fall out in their own ( most likely she has dissolving ones)
I don't know how bad or deep your daughters injury is but my son was in pain and limping for a few days then it was like it didn't happen.

Not recommended to use hydrogen peroxide! It does get rid of bacteria but it also kills new skin growth. (First Aid courses don't use it any more). Good old salt and water is one of the best sources of cleanliness. Just use your common sense. Enjoy your holiday!

Check with Dr first and then the travel insurance company you deal with.

Rome, Genoa and certainly Venice are not wheelchair friendly in many places, cobblestone streets make it extremely difficult for wheelchair users - unless it was an extremely severe laceration she should probably be fine - if you wouldn't send her to school with her injury that treking around these cities probably is going to be an issue

Venice has stairs up to every bridge as stairs down as well and they also have bridges on every single corner. Venice would have to be the most wheelchair unfriendly city on the planet. And I've taken out stitches on my self a few times. Kind of like have pierced ears.

Yeah it's even hard to navigate with wheelie luggage. They have bridges that function like crosswalks in other places. And every bridge has at least two sets of stairs

Check airline's website. Sometimes they require a "Medically fit for travel" form from your doctor. Book assistance from the airline even if you are to accompany her. This would safe tons of time and insure better seats.

I've never been to Italy but it's sad that most European cities are not wheelchair accessible. I know my cousin is in a wheelchair and it's so strange to me that it's not wheelchair accessible

12 year olds heal super fast. If it wasn't a huge gash, she'll probably be okay. On a side note, I would spend more time in Rome and less in Genoa.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. Unfortunately, it was a severe gash that went down to the bone. Her stitches may need to stay in for 2 weeks as cut is also over ankle joint. I don't feel comfortable with her travelling with stitches in or if she will be able to walk on it comfortably. Not sure what we are going to do

Ouch! Poor girl. Bring pain med, antibiotic prescription just in case it gets infected and lots gauze and wound dressing to keep it covers to protect it better should it get bumped. Hope she heals quickly and your vacation is amazing.

I live in Europe and travel frequently around the continent. We have good health care here. When you get here, ask at the front desk of a hotel for either a private doctor's contact or the address to a health centre. Outside of my home country of Finland, I've had experiences with the medical pros in Thessaloniki, Zagreb, Madrid and Milan. All perfect. Don't stress if she needs the stitches out here. You'll find the service just fine.

If you have travel insurance sometimes they have "in network" doctors in various countries. You should call and find out.

A set of crutches would be better than a wheelchair by far. She should still bear a little weight on her leg but it will be easier

How was the trip, by the way?

Help! Daughter's Leg Injury Before Italy Trip

It sounds like a challenging situation with your daughter's leg injury right before your trip to Italy. It's understandable to be concerned about how she will manage with the stitches and soreness during the trip. Here are some tips and suggestions to help you navigate this situation:

Consult with a Doctor

Before your trip, make sure to consult with your daughter's doctor about the best course of action. They will be able to advise you on how to care for the wound during the trip and whether it will be safe to remove the stitches before you leave.

Pack Essentials

Make sure to pack essential items such as bandages, antiseptic ointment, and pain medication to help manage any discomfort your daughter may experience during the trip. It's also a good idea to pack comfortable shoes to help her walk around without aggravating the injury.

Plan for Rest

Consider adjusting your itinerary to allow for more rest breaks and downtime for your daughter. This will help her manage the soreness and ensure that she doesn't overexert herself during the trip.

Find Medical Assistance in Italy

If needed, research medical facilities in the cities you will be visiting in Italy. This way, you will have a plan in place in case your daughter needs medical attention or if the stitches need to be removed while you are there.

Stay Positive

Remember to stay positive and focus on enjoying the trip as much as possible. With the right preparation and care, your daughter will still be able to have a memorable experience in Italy despite the injury.

Safe travels!
