The rail system is easy to use and affordable. We used airbnb in numerous cities including Porto, Nazare, Sintra, Lisbon and Portimão. Take an unlocked cell with you and visit any Vodofone store to get set-up with an inexpensive package. Best tool was having access to Google maps, which can be set for walking directions.

You're welcome. Highly recommend Sintra area...so beautiful and not very far from Lisbon and beach areas. Be sure to try the pasteis de nata and the pastis de Belem while travelling. So delish! Such an amazing country!! Enjoy!

What she said! vodafone indeed has great deals. I think I paid 10 euros for a 4gb card when I was there in march
Porto - stay along the river (ribeira) plenty of airbnb's around there. I stayed here http://abnb.me/EVmg/tmLoLeLvbD and I was worth every penny I paid for it!
Visit the caves on the Gaia side . Porto Augusto's is a smaller one with great tours for walkins. You can always visit croft and offley.
Make sure you have a francesinha while in porto

Do the pirate ship tour out of Portimao. Visit Obidos, Elvira, Sinatra. Get egg tarts from Belem in Lisbon. Yum!

Second Porto and Duoro Valley suggestion at your time of the year. Accommodation inexpensive and easy to find. If travelling by car (be sure to get familiar with toll highway rules), check out Pindao and Covilha area border towns on Spanish border. Also Guimares, surf towns along the coast, Evora in centre, Algarve in south - staying in Luz gave us easy access. If by train, Porto to Coimbra to Lisbon corridor is easy and inexpensive. Lots of great places to enjoy!!!!

Portugal is so fab - not sure if you plan on going to Porto as well as Lisbon but it is worth it, for Port tasting and it's cheap and atmospheric. I also recommend the Douro Valley, and The Alentejo is unspoiled, rural, and wonderful. I have a lot of info on all of those places here in case it helps: http://www.savoirthere.com/.../continents/europe/portugal/
