How to Plan a 3-Week Family Trip to Eastern Europe?

Question:

Wanting to do a trip to Eastern Europe this summer for 3 weeks with 15, 12 and 10 year old. We are flying into Paris (thanks Chris for the cheap flight notification) and then will fly to a starting point in Eastern Europe. We like to get off the beaten track as well as take in the history and architecture. Thinking of possibly Romania, Hungary, Czech, Poland or any other recommendations? Any recommendations for places to see, itineraries as well as best way to travel (train, car rental)?

Just chiming in to say how much I loved Bosnia and Croatia.
Sarajevo and Mostar are must see places in my opinion, especially if you’re interested in history and architecture. Three major religions in the Balkans.

Look to eDreams for the low cost flight options - I would advise booking directly with the airlines rather than through the aggregater AND if the option is available pay through PayPal. Dealing with airlines directly means any problems that occur can be dealt with directly and short story - this fall we were due to fly with Monarch Air, but the ceased to operate, I contacted the airline without much hope, but I also contacted PayPal and the credit card I used - within 7 days of contacting PayPal all funds were back into our account - could not believe it. https://ca.edreams.com/

Our choice for car rental in Europe is Europcar, rates are always good https://www.europcar.com/ CWD insurance is usually covered by the credit card used, just verify with them

Eastern Europe Trip for Families

Planning a trip to Eastern Europe with kids can be a great way to experience the region's rich history, culture, and architecture. Here are some recommendations for places to see, itineraries, and the best way to travel:

Places to See

  • Romania: Bucharest, Transylvania, Brasov, Sighisoara
  • Hungary: Budapest, Lake Balaton, Eger, Sopron
  • Czech Republic: Prague, Brno, Karlovy Vary, Kutna Hora
  • Poland: Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk, Auschwitz-Birkenau
  • Other recommendations: Slovakia (Bratislava, High Tatras), Slovenia (Ljubljana, Lake Bled), Croatia (Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik)

Itineraries

Here is a possible itinerary for a 3-week trip to Eastern Europe with kids:

  • Week 1: Arrive in Budapest and spend 3 days exploring the city. Take a day trip to Lake Balaton. Depart for Prague.
  • Week 2: Spend 4 days in Prague, visiting the Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, and the Old Town. Take a day trip to Karlovy Vary. Depart for Krakow.
  • Week 3: Spend 4 days in Krakow, visiting the Wawel Castle, the Wieliczka Salt Mine, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Depart for Bucharest.

Best Way to Travel

The best way to travel around Eastern Europe depends on your budget and preferences. If you want to be flexible and have the freedom to explore at your own pace, renting a car is a good option. However, if you're on a tight budget or prefer to relax and let someone else do the driving, taking the train is a more affordable and convenient option.

Tips for Traveling with Kids

  • Pack plenty of snacks and activities to keep kids entertained on long train rides.
  • Consider bringing a stroller or backpack carrier for younger children.
  • Be patient and understanding with kids, especially when they're tired or cranky.
  • Make sure to have fun and enjoy the experience!
