Are open return airfares still an option for flexible travelers?

Just book a one way ticket

In Viet Nam all Int'l flights are out of Hanoi.
Kristen
And Ho Chi Minh city which is actually the larger airport. Easy to fly internally to Danang though
Donna
I remember reading about a one year open around the world ticket. You could stop as many times as you wanted but always had to be heading west. I remember the cost was not as high as expected.
Tayla
Star Alliance group has those RTW flights I believe.
Ken
If you can afford first class those tickets can be put on ice till you are ready to return.
Kristen
Last I checked, flying to Ho chi Minh had seat sales of 550$ return for spring. We did the sale this past fall. Easy flights to Bangkok or Danang from there. Not so easy to Cambodia. Flights between Vietnam and Cambodia aren't cheap. Tried from 3 different cities, one way was $170-250 a person. Cambodia to Thailand though is cheap.
Cheryl
What airline to Ho Chi Minh?
Kristen
Calgary LA TOKYO HCMC was with air canada then air Japan. Great flights.
Internal flights were Vietnam airlines as top ranked. There is also vietjet and one other but they were notorious for being late or cancelled. We experienced that a couple times.
Bryanna
We have Calgary>Denver>Tokyo>Ho Chi Minh City on united
Kristen
I think that was an option for us too but we were looking at travel times and I think ours was shorter at the time.
Bryanna
We are going next week. Flying into Ho Chi Minh City. You bus to Phnom Penh then Siem Reap if you wanted to go to Angkor Wat. At that point you're pretty close if you want to cross into Thailand.
Kristen
It's a long bus ride though isn't it? Hence we skipped it. And flights were ridiculous.
Bryanna
Ya it's like 10 hours to siem reap I think. But if you were continuing on to Thailand on a backpacker budget it's doable. We aren't going this time because of time.
Kristen
Ya we didn't want to waste that time. We wanted a flight or at least overnight train. No such luck. Next time I'll go to Cambodia from Thailand.
Janine
We flew into Phnom Penh and returned from HCMC a few weeks ago with China Airlines under one ticket. From Phnom Penh we flew to Siem Reap and then to HCMC with Cambodia Angkor Air, but I agree it wasn't cheap. It sounded like you could get a private driver for $150 per car or so from Phnom Penh, so I might have opted to do that in hindsight.
A.I. says...
Is there such a thing as open returns on airfares?
Many airlines no longer offer open return tickets, as they prefer passengers to have set return dates in order to manage their flights more efficiently. However, there are still some airlines that allow for flexible return dates, usually for an additional fee.
Traveling to SE Asia
If you are planning to travel to SE Asia, such as Phnom Penh, and potentially return from Danang or Bangkok, it's important to check with airlines that fly to those destinations to see if they offer open return options. Some airlines may allow you to purchase a ticket with an open return date, but this could be subject to availability and restrictions.
No Set Plans Yet
If you do not have set plans yet and want to keep your travel flexible, it's best to look for airlines that offer flexible ticket options or allow for changes to be made to your return date for a fee. This way, you can have the freedom to extend your trip or change your return location without too much hassle.
Final Thoughts
While open return tickets may not be as common as they used to be, there are still ways to keep your travel plans flexible. It's important to do your research and check with airlines for their policies on open returns and flexible ticket options before booking your flights.

Is there such a thing as open returns on airfares anymore. I'm wanting to travel to SE Asia(Phnom Penh) and maybe return from Danang or Bangkok. |Dates and location unknown! No set plans yet obviously, but want to be that way. Thoughts?
