Iceland is EXPENSIVE. I don't think "decent deal" can be used in the same sentence as "Iceland". Having Said that, I went with my wife in March with some friends. For the rental I searched for days on end for the best deal. It ended up being sixt car rental. It was March so off season but paid about 600 for the week for an awd just in case you want to head down any "F" roads. Of course you save big by using a credit card that has car insurance as a benefit and opt out of insurance through the rental agency. They try to tell you that you may not be covered for ash, gravel, etc but I spoke with my credit card company (visa Avion) prior to leaving and listed out everything and she assured me I was covered for everything. Hope that helps.
. Good luck. Ohh and dont speed even a little. There is almost no police presence on the roads but the roads are stacked with photo radar cameras programmed to automatically send you a "thank you" bill after you return to Canada. A speeding ticket in Iceland is around $1000 minimum.

We found that renting manual as opposed to automatic helped to cut the cost - good luck!

I went there a couple of years ago and it's true... it's pretty expensive there. We rented from Sixt... it seemed like the best deal...

Also try priceline and carrentals.com
Based on your group you'll probably need 2 Suv's. These are about 8-900 but then if you're splitting the cost, it's not so painful.

We used reoute1 car rentals. They were very good. Picked us up at airport (holding sign for us as we departed) and we bypassed the HUGE lineup that all the on-site airport rental agencies had. Did paperwork at car in parking lot and we were off. Better pricing than the others and the car was great. Dropped off at airport too. Definitely recommend.

Car Rental Tips for Iceland Trip

Planning a trip to Iceland with a group of 12 in September can be an exciting adventure. However, finding decent price car rentals can be a challenge. Here are some tips to help you find affordable car rentals for your trip:

1. Book in Advance

Try to book your car rental in advance to get the best deals. Prices tend to go up as the travel date approaches, so booking early can save you money.

2. Compare Prices

Don't settle for the first car rental company you come across. Take the time to compare prices from different rental companies to find the best deal.

3. Consider Off-Airport Locations

Renting a car from an off-airport location can sometimes be cheaper than renting from the airport. Look for rental locations near your accommodation or in the city center.

4. Look for Discounts

Check for any discounts or promotions that rental companies may be offering. This could include discounts for booking online, loyalty programs, or special deals for large groups.

5. Consider Sharing a Larger Vehicle

Since you are traveling with a group of 12, consider renting a larger vehicle and splitting the cost among the group. This can be more cost-effective than renting multiple smaller cars.

6. Check for Hidden Fees

Before booking your car rental, make sure to check for any hidden fees such as insurance, additional driver fees, or fuel charges. These fees can add up quickly and significantly increase the total cost of your rental.

By following these tips, you should be able to find a decent price car rental for your trip to Iceland. Have a great time exploring this beautiful country with your group!
