We flew through Narita. If you do, take the Narita Express in to Tokyo (buy for train tickets at airport, show you are a Canadian and it's only about $40 Cdn return and a fabulous ride (about 1.5 hours). You need to book a spot for the way back too at some point before you head back. Figure out which prefecture (area) of Tokyo you are staying at get off at the right stop. (Ie- we stayed in Shinjuku, good area for tourists). You may need to take a taxi or JR Line train to your area/hotel. It's a pretty intricate system so do your homework on it. You will love Tokyo. We used Haneda tours for a day tour, they were fantastic.

We flew into Narita and caught a train into Tokyo, very efficient. If you by a rail pass before you go to the country some lines are covered by it from the airport into Tokyo.

Haneda, most of the domestic flights use it, closer to Tokyo downtown and cheaper to travel.
but considering you need to fly 12 hours in the air I would just pick the best deal for the flight first, airport is the last concern for me. there is no way you have to waste extra hours once you got there. unlike LRT, there is absolutely ZERO delay for Japanese trains. use your Google map plan your trip, you will find out the exactly time u need to travel between the two airports and Tokyo.

We are planning to leave Edm, Canada to Kuala Lumpur. Some flights have a layover in Tokyo for more than 7 hour then Tokyo to KL for under $900. I thought we have an option to stop for 3 nights.

Any difficulties learning their train system?

Their subway and train system is complex, it takes some time to study and plan. Having said that it makes perfect sense once you figure it out. The lines are recolour coded, numbered and named with lots of English signage. Don't be afraid to ask questions. People are extremely polite and orderly, they respect line ups, allow others to exit trains before boarding and don't push.

Connie how do you like Japan?

It is a verry clean, orderly, polite society. We really enjoyed the local food, signs and high speed train travel.

Hanneda is in the city of Tokyo and Narita is 40 minutes out from Tokyo Station. Take the Narita Express to Tokyo for a relaxing train ride to Tokyo Station approximately 28,000 Yen. Don't forget to get your Japan Rail pass. If you do you can use the pass for Narita Express to Tokyo station or any other station it stops at. As for flights to Haneda from Edmonton yes to can fly with a connection either Calgary or vancouver. Hope this helps.

<p>Choosing the Best Airport for Tokyo: Narita or Haneda

Choosing the Best Airport for Tokyo: Narita or Haneda

When planning a trip to the vibrant city of Tokyo, one of the first decisions you'll need to make is which airport to fly into – Narita International Airport or Haneda Airport. Both airports have their pros and cons, and the choice ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences.

Narita International Airport

Narita International Airport (NRT) is Tokyo's primary international airport and the busiest in Japan. It's located approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) east of central Tokyo in the city of Narita, Chiba Prefecture. Here are some key points about Narita Airport:

  • It's the larger of the two airports, with two main terminals and four runways.
  • It handles a higher volume of international flights, especially from long-haul destinations.
  • Getting to central Tokyo from Narita can take between 60-90 minutes by train or bus, depending on traffic conditions.
  • There are various transportation options, including the Narita Express (N'EX) train, which is the fastest and most convenient option, but also the most expensive.
  • Narita Airport offers a wide range of amenities, including shopping, dining, and lounges.

Haneda Airport

Haneda Airport (HND) is Tokyo's closer and more convenient airport for domestic and some regional international flights. It's located approximately 14 kilometers (9 miles) south of central Tokyo. Here are some key points about Haneda Airport:

  • It's smaller than Narita, with two main terminals and four runways.
  • It primarily handles domestic and regional flights, although it has been expanding its international routes in recent years.
  • Getting to central Tokyo from Haneda is much faster, taking only 20-30 minutes by train or bus.
  • Transportation options include the Tokyo Monorail, Keikyu Line, and various bus services, which are generally more affordable than the options from Narita.
  • Haneda Airport has a good selection of amenities, but not as extensive as Narita.

Which Airport Should You Choose?

When deciding between Narita and Haneda airports, consider the following factors:

  • Location and convenience: If you're primarily concerned with getting to central Tokyo as quickly as possible, Haneda Airport is the better choice due to its proximity to the city.
  • Flight options: If you're flying from a long-haul destination or need more international flight options, Narita Airport will likely be your best bet.
  • Amenities: If you value a wider range of shopping, dining, and lounge options during your layover or wait time, Narita Airport might be the better choice.
  • Budget: Transportation costs to and from Haneda Airport are generally lower than those for Narita Airport, which could be a factor if you're on a tight budget.

Ultimately, the decision between Narita and Haneda airports depends on your specific travel needs and priorities. If you're flying internationally and don't mind the longer commute, Narita Airport might be the better choice. However
