Do you ski? Go skiing! We went to Nozawaonsen. Beautiful village, beautiful skiing. We trained from Tokyo and then to Kyoto. Maybe your itinerary is too short but skiing in Japan is amazing if you can swing it.

12 days is not a huge amount of time. I would plan to spend 2-3 days in Kyoto/Nara and probably spend the rest of your time in Tokyo. In Tokyo do Asakusa, Tokyo-Edo museum, Sumida river cruise, Harajuku, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ginza, and Yasukuni-jinja and surrounding areas. There is simply so much to just see without a “set” itinerary. Remember the food in Tokyo is to die for so make sure you plan to go to a variety of places to eat and this does not have to be particularly thought out or planned but there are definitely lots of great well priced restaurants. Brunch at the the New York grill in the Park Hyatt used to be excellent and view spectacular on a clear day. Try kushi-age, tempura, shabu shabu, sukiyaki, etc, definitely plan part of your trip around eating! The department stores are all fascinating in Ginza. Have fun!!

We spent our last day in Narita City before flying home, it was one of our favourite days.
My brother in law lives there are just took their 2yr old to super Mario world at universal and had a blast.

In my past travels, I've found that doing a search in Google like "suggested 2 week itinerary in Japan" brings up fantastic suggestions from dozens of people who've written travel blogs ! I've used this approach for trips to Vietnam and Thailand with great results !

With kids some downtime is good to let them chill but still have fun, also being fun for adults I suggest a day trip to Kamakura! Beautiful beaches for kids to run and play, with beachside cafes. Its an old samurai town so filled with amazing historic wooden houses and lots of old shops, and amazing food. So many gorgeous temples and shrines and the fun thing is you can ride around in jin-rickshaw to sightsee ! Kids would enjoy! Its my fav place near Tokyo, less than an hour by regular train! Also the perfect small town to rent bikes near the station and ride around. Enjoy!

The next sumo tournament takes place in Osaka at that exact time. It is fascinating both as a sport and as a culture. It's full of traditions, many based on Shinto, that have not changed in hundreds of years. If this interests you at all, you can catch some of the current tournament online right now. Sumopedia (short video series by NHK) is a good starting point to learn about Grand Sumo, too.

Just went to Japan to visit families. We have 8, 11 and 13, went to the amusement park called Fuji Q Highland in Yamanashi Prefecture. They have more thrill rides than Disney so good for teens. Even my 8yo loved it more than Disney Land lol
There are direct hwy bus from Tokyo and nice hotel by the park.

We are off to Japan March 12 to 24 . 2 adults 2 kids 11 year old girl and 15 year old boy.
