Hey everyone does anyone have tips on how to get aeroplan points? Or is anyone booking a flight or vacation with air canada or a star alliance airline, and doesn't have a points card? I sign up for every bonus offer they offer even if I don't think I will qualify sometimes I end up getting the points anyway

Have you gone thru the usual steps of signing up for aeroplan credit cards. I got lucky last year and was able to sign up for a TD one and an American Express one, both waived the yearly fee for one year. I think I got about 50,000 pts out of that and a 2 for 1 on the TD card too. Just have to keep an eye out for these cards and offers.

even if someone used your card, it wouldn't work as it has to be the same name as the person flying

Best deal I have heard lately is TD Canada Trust aeroplan card. Friend and his wife apply for the card, no fee first year and get 15,000 Welcome Bonus pts. The sweet part of this is if the card holder spends $1K in first 90 days, another bonus of 10,000 points - hence a total of 25,000 pts good for a trip anywhere in North America. His wife got a card and got the same pts for simply each buying a leather sofa - hence 2 trips together

I have the TD aeroplan visa. Got all the promos. put every single purchase on it (and pay it off diligently). I earned 30k points last year (with the 15k promo and a couple of AC flights).

I hate aeroplan. We have well over 100000 points that we've been trying to use, but the available flights are terrible. Like 17 hours from Calgary to Las Vegas.... My RBC Infinite Avion card is AWESOME - no blackouts, and it books any flight available anywhere in the world, anytime. I have tried 4 different times now in 8 months to 4 different destinations, and cannot find a single decent flight using Aeroplan.

Robbie, try for a long haul flight like Europe or Singapore but must do at earliest opportunity (ie one year out)

American express has an offer of 25,000 points if you sign up for their gold card (first year annual fee is waived). The catch is you must charge $500 in the first 3 months to the card.

Ya using creditcards. I have Amex aeroplan that gives 1mile for $1. I also have cibc visa but it only gives 1 mile for every $2 ($60 a yr)
And signup u can get btwn 10,000 to 40,000 miles. Thats a free flight at 25k

@ Robbie use them for car rental or redeem for giftcards or merchandise then.

Sobeys used to give aeroplan & i loved it. Collected over 15,000 a yr there.
But also get gas at Esso

I don't think you can earn points on other people's flights. Name on flight must match name of aeroplan member.

Flying out of Calgary? I have found the best use of points to be flights from Calgary to Central America (Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama). Also China and Japan. But you are right - some destinations just don't seem to work.....

get the AMEX credit card, a mile for every dollar spent, just look into I think they still have a sign up bonus 25000 a flight anywhere in canada. Just book ticket way in advance for better flight options.

I used the CIBC/TD credit card. And you cannot give your number to other people for collecting points. I usually end up using my aeroplan points for merchandise rather than flights now, it used to be a better deal but now taxes cost almost as much (you still have to pay these) and there are more restrictions on when you can use the points and how much you need for a flight than there used to be

My daughter and friend used aeroplan points over Christmas to travel to Arizona and souther California and got bumped in San Diego with each having a 5 & 6 hour delay back to Edmonton. I use my points (100K) each summer to travel to the Maritimes cottage with likley no chance of being bumped but cancellations still happen. Still better than paying out nearly $3K for the 4 of us. My travel outside of Canada normally is United a Star Alliance member. No problems with UAL.

Amanda Wideman - I have the cheap card, lol. The first year annual fee is FREE, then its $60 after that. But you only get 5000 aeroplan when signing up I think. For people that travel alot, it makes sense to get the ones with bigger annual fee because you get alot for that. If your luggage is lost, there is insurance for that incl. Also cancellation on your trip is incl if you pay with that card, and insurance for rental cars is incl if you use that card, plus some have health ins too.....etc.. but I don't travel that much, but i still get 1 mile for $1. I had an Amex card to get the 30000 sign up points, but have closed it since. I have the RBC Infinite Avion card, and in my opinion, nothing comes close. It's great because I can use my points for any flight, anywhere in the world, on any airline with no blackouts and NO annual fee with my banking package.
