Hi guys, looking to book a flight for January 28, from YYC to Cancun, with Air Canada, there is a direct flight, i can book it online, but was wondering if its actually gonna fly on that day, or it might be canceled? Is air canada having any flight to Cancun available this days? Wana make sure i can fly out. Thank you

Hi Brad,
air canada has not yet resumed flights from Calgary to Cancun. Only westjet has resumed flights from Calgary to Cancun.
air canada and westjet have essentially been throwing everything on the wall (scheduling flights to a variety of different destinations) and then seeing what sticks (enough demand to resume flights).
air canada's flights from Calgary to Cancun are *scheduled* to resume on December 19th. Unfortunately, it won't really be known until about a week beforehand whether or not they'll actually resume.
The pilot program at YYC seems to have increased demand to Mexico. And with no restrictions for entry into Mexico, I'd say air canada's flights to Mexico have a better shot of resuming than the other destinations they've scheduled.

Brad keeping in mind what Chris said, if you're looking for a safe bet, I'd say westjet on the Saturday flight.
Good luck!

Wade are you quarantine for the 2 weeks between flights? If not.. any issues encountered with this?

Wade The Calgary program is a pilot project and only is available if your first point of entry into Canada is Calgary. You must self quarantine until test results come in ( usually two days) and if negative test again in a week. You must remain in Alberta for two weeks.I have heard the 2nd test is at your expense.

air canada was pretty smooth. As long as you have the proper insurance and QR code from the health form you’re good.
They expired my visa the day my travel insurance runs out. That’s the only downfall. Usually it’s a 90 day visa.

Things are gonna change 10 times between now and then. No point in speculation

Personally, from what I've seen across Canada, once westjet or air canada actually decide to resume an international route, they've stuck with it. The problem is, people see a flight available a month or two from now, and think the airline has resumed flying that route (and who can blame them), but the airline has not actually resumed flying the route yet.

Our direct return flights YYC/CUN for January 5 have been cancelled and re-route is via YYZ

Profile picture of Brad

Brad

Edith that sucks.

Profile picture of Edith

Edith

Brad We didn't accept the change and requested a refund. AC would only offer credit so we initiated a Credit Card charge back using the script offered by Air Passenger Rights and received a refund. We have decided to postpone the trip until we have faith in the new normal.

Edith yeah, so if you flight for January 5 was canceled, i dont have much faith for January 28, when id like to leave. Thing is i was gonna use my Aeroplane points for this flight, and im not sure what happens in case it gets canceled. I know i can fly through US, with a connection in Dallas with AA, but was gonna fly air canada. Wjll see how things develop

Brad AA is starting to eliminate routes so keep an eye on that option too. (They are running way more flights than most airlines, but you don't know what Biden may put in place for travel restrictions once he takes over.)

Edith that especially sucks because then you miss out on the rapid testing and have to quarantine for the full 14 days

Edith Just to confirm, this was with air canada, not west jet?

Edith

Yes air canada

Winter flights are always more susceptible to delays and cancellations and with the pandemic there's even less certainty, especially with numbers currently on the rise. (Governments could shut down travel again.) Unless you book a refundable ticket, I wouldn't take the chance.

you’re asking for the impossible at this point. there is absolutley zero guarantee that ANY filight will be operating then, or at any time until we have the Covid issue dealt with definitively. End of January is 10 weeks away; there will almost certainly be airlines go under between now and then. I spent 4 decades in that industry, and the situation has NEVER been more dire; when you have airports like YYC that have posted double digit growth almost every year in the last 40, drop 90% in pax volumes in one year and lay off over a third of their staff, and thousands of airline staff out of work....it’s all so far beyond the worst situation ever imagined in an industry that has ALWAYS been fairly recession proof ( airports at least), this is completely uncharted territory. I would NEVER have believed I’d live to see a day where the airport would reach a point where closing entire concourses at tens of thousands of dollars a week in costs and millions a month in lost revenue would be more economical than keeping them operating, yet here we are. Personally, I would not be booking a vacation flight ANYWHERE for the foreseeable future. I’ve been stuck in another country after the airline I’d travelled on went under, and it was monsterously difficult & expensive. Now? you could become a permanent resident somewhere you hadn’t planned...and I’m not trying to be ”funny”

I would also say no guarantees...my son needed to go Waterloo for a couple of weeks and his flight changes dates every other day for the whole month before. I personally would wait to book a week or two before...it has taken me 6 months to get credits and or refunds from AC , WJ, klm and Air Brussels and most of those involve credits and not actual cash back on my credit card. Waiting to book will not be more expensive and might clarify things.

Covid travel tips 1) Be Flexible EVERYTHING you book is subject to change 2)Be Resilient there is no point in getting upset, everyone is having a tough time traveling these days and it’s especially hard on those who work in tourism 3) Be Prepared. You might have to extend your trip if you can’t get home. 4) Be well insured

I would fly westjet instead. I just flew to Cancun 3 days ago and the flight was full. Not a single empty seat. Flights won't get cancelled then
