If you want talk/text/data - try roam mobility. If you only want data on the SIM card - try AlwaysOnlineWireless ... both by the same company. You can order the SIM ahead of time, load it - and set the activation date for when you arrive abroad.
Alison
Brad thank you so much!
Nadine
I agree with this recommendation, you can get the SIM card at Petro Canada for $9.99 or order from Roam Mobilty online for $2.99 right now

Brad why didn’t we do this lol Abigail Connell

Brenda
highly recommend snorkeling with the Manta Rays, we loved Kona and spent 2 weeks with our kids, lots to do
Alison
Brenda thank you

We rented an airbnb near hilo. Great quiet beaches on that side where turtles came every day. It's only a 2hr drive from 1 side of the island to the other so you will have lots of time to do it all! Carl Smith beach is the best swim ,snorkel and relax. And do the night snorkel with mantaray my 11year old LOVED and we did to.

Flumin’ Kohala kayak was really fun for a laid back adventure at the north end of the island. Stop at Lava Lava Beach Club for lunch.

Do you use Bell? They have a plan where you use your own plan for data (unlimited text and call), in USA, for $8 CAD a day. It was the best option for me whenever I go there.
Alison
Fiona I am on Bell but found that a lot of money. The SIM card I want above is $40 for 30 days unlimited talk, text and data.
Tracy
Alison I’ll ask my brother he travels a lot lol like everywhere I’ll let you know

Koodo mobility has an excellent plan

If your phone is unlocked, you can buy a SIM card and a tourist plan at T-mobile. Last time we went to the US and cruise we paid US $50 for card and plan. We got a local number, unlimited text and calls plus 10gigs of data. You can go anywhere in the US (and Mexico) and it works. It looks like Kona has 2 T-Mobile locations if you’re interested.

Order a Straight Talk SIM online (~$1US) and have it mailed to wherever you are staying (or a border drop if you are close). You then just need WiFi access when you get there to then activate it with a plan of your choosing. For example we went with the $90US for unlimited data plan for 2 phones for 30 days.

Heading to Hawaii: Getting a SIM Card and Tips for a First-Time Visit with a 9-Year-Old
If you're planning an 18-day trip to Kona, Hawaii, in April with your 9-year-old, you're in for an unforgettable adventure! To ensure you stay connected and make the most of your time in this tropical paradise, here are some tips on getting a SIM card and other useful advice.
Getting a SIM Card in Kona
One of the most convenient options for getting a SIM card in Kona is purchasing one from the airport upon arrival. Both major carriers, Verizon and AT&T, have kiosks at the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport. However, prices can be higher at the airport, so you may want to consider other options:
- Local Retailers: Visit local retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, or Target in Kona to purchase a prepaid SIM card at a more affordable rate.
- Carrier Stores: Head to a carrier store like Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile in Kona to get a SIM card directly from the provider.
- Online Purchase: Before your trip, consider ordering a prepaid SIM card online from companies like Straight Talk or H2O Wireless for a more cost-effective option.
Tips for a First-Time Visit with a 9-Year-Old
- Pack Accordingly: Hawaii's tropical climate calls for lightweight, breathable clothing and plenty of sun protection. Don't forget hats, sunscreen, and swimsuits for both you and your child.
- Plan Kid-Friendly Activities: While lounging on the beach is a must, be sure to incorporate activities that your 9-year-old will enjoy, such as snorkeling, visiting the Kona Atlantis Submarine Adventure, or exploring the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
- Consider a Luau: Attending a traditional Hawaiian luau can be a fun and educational experience for your child. Check out the Kona Village Resort's Luau of Paradise or the Royal Kona Resort's Voyager Luau.
- Stay Hydrated: The Hawaiian sun can be intense, so make sure to keep you and your child well-hydrated throughout the day.
- Embrace Island Time: Hawaii has a laid-back, relaxed vibe. Embrace the slower pace and allow for flexibility in your schedule to truly enjoy the island lifestyle.
With a little preparation and an open mind, your 18-day adventure in Kona, Hawaii, will be a trip you and your 9-year-old will cherish for years to come.
