Where can I find cheap or free parking near downtown Edmonton?

Question:

Looking for cheap/free parking near downtown Edmonton.
Wanting to stay @ an airbnb in downtown core, near Churchill station/City centre mall but they don't have parking. Within a ~1km walking radius would be nice.
Hoping to just park car for 3 days/nights, most likely won't be driving it at all but in/out ability could be handy.
On Google sat view looks like lots of potential lots in the 95-97 ave/103a-Jasper area has lots but most seemed pricey for all day parking. Any know to have cheap day rates?
Had also seen street parking @ 96 st & 101 ave. Any other unmetered street parking near downtown?
Any feedback from locals or BTDT?

Ehhh you're going to have a tough time finding something with the new rogers place up...all paid lots downtown have jacked their prices and most free street parking is doninated by residents. Behind grant macewan university (105 ave to 108 ave, 109 st to 103 st), there is residential parking that many students use to park for free. But will be very difficult to secure a consistent spot

You might also get lucky and find something between jasper ave and 107 ave and 97 st to 82st...but a bit of a jaunt in not the nicest area.

Thanks on the university area info. Had hoped to stay a bit closer (that area almost 2kms out) as I'll have 3 kids w/ me.
But if it's free & we don't leave spot, it could pan out. ?

Yeah its really too bad your airbnb doesn't include parking. Rogers place has made downtown insane

Jasper/97 I was already looking, but if not a nice area car might not be there when I get back ?

Profile picture of Larissa

Larissa

It'll be there haha just don't leave belongings visible - if you're walking with kids, especially at night, you may find yourself approached by homeless people rather frequently.

You may want to check the hotels in the area. They include parking sometimes and may end up being cheaper when you factor the cost of parking.

Parking 95/ 96 street is sketchy. Don't leave any thing in the car or it will be gone! Also remember there is a 72 hour parking limit on unmetered street. Car can be towed! Downtown is a horrible place to try and find cheap or free parking!! You may find something farther away and take LRT downtown!

weekend or weekday? when do you need it

Weekday, Tues Nov 8 - Fri Nov 11.

If it was weekend, I could have helped you. I have a space by 97st and 101ave that I don't use nights and weekends. The stretch on 101 ave and 96 st are often taken up by office workers during the weekdays, it'll be hard to have in/out during business hours.

If you plan to just park it for three days, consider leaving it at a free lot associated with the lrt and just take the train into downtown.
Or you can park it on the street in the Oliver area, west of 109st, north or south of Jasper Ave.

Are there certain LRT stops that have the free parking lots?
I'd thought of parking in Oliver/Rossdale areas, though hoped to find closer to downtown 1st. They are my back up ideas though

Stadium station, but i don't think you can leave cars more than 24 hours

FYI - Rossdale is at the bottom of a very steep hill.

You cannot park for more than 24 hours at a park and ride lot.

I see Clareview station is mostly paid parking now ! Rob from the rich and the poor now it seems!

It's a better idea to look for airbnb that has included parking if you want to keep your car downtown but not pay high daily rates.

Profile picture of Michael

I was trying, but couldn't find any large enough for family & still close enough for kids to handle walk to mall, etc

not sure if you're committed to that location, but I see you have three kids with you - that's not a particularly family friendly area, especially at night. If you're flexible, please PM me and i'd be happy to help. re: parking, the Chateau Lacombe has public parking about three blocks away, and it's $11/day. I think that's the cheapest you'll find downtown. Good luck.

We'd actually hoped to go to La Ronde on Tues Nov 8! So Château Lacombe location would definitely work.
PM'd ?

Try the hotels at West Edmonton Mall and take the #100 bus downtown, it's only a 10 minute ride. Lots to do at the Mall and free parking.

Profile picture of Michael

Michael

10 minutes, wow!
All the Google transit suggestions were a minimum 30min+

Profile picture of Amelia

Amelia

Michael Källevik it's not 10 minutes, the express bus from WEM to downtown isn't that fast, 25-30 min is more realistic. I would suggest maybe trying places outside the downtown core and just taking a direct bus from the hotel. There are a couple hotels by northgate mall and the transit centre has many buses that come right downtown. A brand new hotel called the Fairfield by Marriott just opened across from the bus station.

Michael

Thanks Amelia for the heads up, didn't think Google could be so off on bus times.
Northgate area has potential, had hoped to be downtown but really only need to be there Tues & Thurs evenings.
Can shop anywhere, City Centre was just convenient to the airbnb I'd found. But Northgate or WEM or...? would all be fine time killers for the wife & kids

Profile picture of Amelia

Amelia

Michael Källevik that makes sense. I live by the new hotel and the bus takes me about 25 min to Jasper ave and 103 street. Hope you find something that suits your stay downtown.

Profile picture of Lisa

Michael Källevik don't go to Northgate Mall. I don't think it will be worth your time. WEM or Kingsway are your best bets. The LRT will also take you to Southgate.

Profile picture of Amelia

Amelia

Or stay closer to an LRT station, like in claireview or near Southgate or century park.

Amelia

Michael, give us an idea of your itinerary and we might offer better suggestions. Downtown for kids during the week is boring. The only thing there is offices and businesses. Are you coming to Edmonton for work or pleasure?

Profile picture of Michael

Michael

Yeah I'm noticing there's not as much as I'd hoped to do.
Right now itinerary only had La Ronde on evening of 8th & Winspear on 10th evening.
Now thinking might be better to just stay @ WEM or something, come downtown only for those 2 events.

Profile picture of Gina

Gina

Downtown's not boring for kids!! There's the Art Gallery, Stanley Milner Library, a park every two blocks in Oliver (along 103 Ave), Audrey's Books, Muttart, Legislature, including interpretive centre and grounds, great Pokémon Go locations, geocaching, movie theatre, the River Valley... loads to see & do!

Profile picture of Gina

Gina

Sorry, I get defensive when people say downtown is boring! But I suppose WEM is what most people visiting YEG want to see.

Profile picture of Amelia

Amelia

Downtown is great but IMO, they are not really kid friendly during the weekdays.

Profile picture of Amelia

Amelia

Ok, let me clarify, how old are the kids?

Profile picture of Michael

Michael

6, 9 & 15

Profile picture of Amelia

Amelia

Yes, I stand by what I said. Downtown is likely not going to be the funnest place for them. Definitely have a day at West edmonton mall. Bring your swimsuits, hit the waterpark. Eat on Bourbon street. Go shopping. One day done. The other two days, split between space and science centre, Edmonton valley zoo, muttart conservatory, Edmonton legislature etc. By that point, everyone is wiped. Find a place close to downtown but don't feel you have to stay downtown.

Cheap/Free Parking Near Downtown Edmonton

If you're planning to stay in an AirBnB near Churchill station or the City Centre mall in downtown Edmonton, finding affordable or free parking can be a challenge. Fortunately, there are a few options to consider within a 1km walking radius.

Street Parking

While most streets in the downtown core have metered parking, there are a few areas where you can find free street parking. One option is the residential area around 96 Street and 101 Avenue, as mentioned. However, keep in mind that these spots are limited and may be occupied by residents.

Parkades and Lots

The area around 95-97 Avenue and 103a Street-Jasper Avenue does have several parking lots and parkades. While some can be quite pricey for all-day parking, there are a few affordable options:

  • YMCA Parkade (100 St NW & 103A Ave NW) - Evening and weekend rates are around $5/day.
  • Edmonton City Centre West Parkade (102 St NW & Jasper Ave) - Evening and weekend rates are around $4/day.
  • Oxford Tower Parkade (10235 101 St NW) - Evening and weekend rates are around $3/day.

Tips from Locals

Here are some additional tips from locals who have experience with parking in downtown Edmonton:

  • "Check the City of Edmonton website for any special events or construction that may impact parking availability or rates."
  • "Consider using public transportation or ride-sharing services if you don't plan on driving during your stay. It might be more cost-effective than paying for parking."
  • "Be mindful of residential parking zones and read the signs carefully to avoid getting a ticket."

With a bit of research and flexibility, you should be able to find affordable or even free parking near your downtown Edmonton AirBnB. Happy parking and enjoy your stay!
