My family flew on EVA Air to and from the Philippines recently. It was quite nice actually. Older planes but lots of nice touches like refreshing face spritzes in the washrooms and good food.

We used air china to go to Shanghai and found it great! Small seats of course, but that's pretty standard now.

been on all of them many times. They are all good. It's just a plane ride.

EVA was really good! Took it to Bali for my honeymoon. Only complaint is that their app is glitchy

I flew EVA air from yvr to bangkok and back in 2016 and was impressed with the airplane - lots of room, lots of entertainment options, and above average food and beverage service. I would definitely recommend this airline

Thank you, everyone and those future who will comment. Due to the approval delay, I went ahead and book on cathay pacific for yvr to bkk round trip, layover in HK both ways, just for $964 in Oct 2017.

I'm seriously considering EVA Air to Bangkok. I've heard lots of good things about EVA. It might be $70 or $80 more but it's worth to me to be comfortable and enjoy a very long flight.

Eva is great!! Hong Kong airlines is a no frills airline which is ok for short flights but no long. I have a good friend who just flew with them and she wouldn't again. Cathay is a great airline!!!

I took Cathay to Bangkok 6 years ago. Great airline with excellent service. EVA is not quite as expensive these days.

Eva was fantastic last year when we went to the Philippines. We got a decent deal found through here (YVR deals) and were really impressed at how pleasant the staff and flights themselves were.
We are going back to the Philippines in February and are flying on air china so we'll see how that is.
but with the deal we got we couldn't say no. I'd tolerate a crappy flight for the deal!

Eva is wonderful, for an additional reasonable $$ you can upgrade to a level below "Business Class" but with Business Class seats and treats for a very comfortable trip. Much cheaper out of Seattle on the flights we've done with them. Have fun!

air china - had zero legroom, very limited alcohol. like 1/4 cup of wine when i asked for a glass of wine. Limited understanding of English. Not allowed to use smartphones at all.. but tablets are ok? Anything going through china WILL be delayed and have spent number of flights sitting on the tarmac but unable to depart. Frustrating!

EVA is great, air china and china eastern are very cramped, and not very heavy on service. Hong Kong is fine.

We had a great EVA Air experience. YVR-Taipei-Hanoi, then Saigon-YVR

Went from Jakarta-Taipei-Vancouver 10 years ago with EVA, the economy class seat was too cramp. I am quite small and the seat is just my size. That was 10 years ago tho, unsure now. Not big fan of the food though. I like CX better although the price is quite something, it will never go lower than $1,300 to Jakarta, maybe similar pricing to Southeast Asia destinations as well, and depend on the season. I like CX as the seat is comfy for long flight (13 hrs to HK and connecting to Jakarta for another 4 hrs). I have never been with air china but China Airlines. It stopped in Taipei, price is lower than CX, quite comfy but not a big fan of the food. Japan Air is quite cheap, you can get it under $1,000 to fly to Asia in certain months. Hope this helps!

General rule is to avoid Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Russian and American carriers at all costs.
EVA Air is a five star airline (of nine in the world), and is a Star Alliance / air canada partner. It is comparable to Korean, Asiana, and Thai. air china is also Star Alliance, but quality can vary. Hong Kong is owned by the parent group of hainan airlines, and is comparable to Air China.
Of course if cathay pacific, Japan, ANA, or Singapore becomes an option, always jump on those.

They're all the same, minute details.. grab the best deal & times that work best. I've had some great flights on Chinese airlines, can't bulk them together as being bad.

Eva Air is good, I would never fly with air china or HK Air. Too risky to fly long haul with small airlines.

I've been doing my research for a flight to Bangkok...its seems to me EVA Airlines is the best of the three.

My husband just flew on Cathay. He was very disappointed. We have flown CX and Emirates regularly and now wont be flying CX. It just wasn't the service that had gone downhill but he did notice a lack of service for extras, snacks, etc. Unfortunate as we have always flown CX from YVR

air china is fine. Use the 787. Expect to find it packed. Layover at airports usually are 5-7 hours if on ward travel. Eva Air is good also.

EVA is the only one I would fly on based on safety ratings. They are mid priced, often less than Cathay which is a very safe airline.

Flew air china to Vietnam from Yvr in Dec. 2016 returning Mar 2017. Airport staff not friendly, but flight crew excellent on all 4 segments. Large, comfortable planes.

Flew EVA to Vietnam from YVR - good airline and they even returned my ipad which I had left on the plane!

I've flown on both air china and EVA in economy class out of YVR and they are both pretty similar. I flew air china to Thailand and I would fly with them again any time. I didn't have any issues with them. Their staff at YVR were amazingly good to me. Food wasn't bad and the service was fine. One thing with air china (as with china eastern), you cannot use your cell phone on the flight even it is in airplane mode. They were pretty strict about this. I have an iPod and after explaining to them it wasn't a cellphone they were fine with it. But yeah, that can be a real pain in the ass for people.
EVA was a great experience even though I was horribly sick. I flew with them to Hong Kong back when they had the 747 out of YVR. One thing about EVA. If you're on a connecting flight out of TPE with them and you choose to select your seats. You can sometimes pick premium economy seats (use seatguru for help with that) at the same price as an economy seat. I don't know how this works, but my guess is on short flights on the 777 they don't bother selling premium economy tickets.

Airline Experiences: Air China, Hong Kong Airlines, and EVA Air

As an avid traveler, I've had the opportunity to fly with various airlines, and today, I'll be sharing my experiences with Air China, Hong Kong Airlines, and EVA Air. These airlines offer flights to and from destinations across Asia, making them popular choices for those traveling within the region or connecting through major Asian hubs.

Air China

Air China is the national flag carrier of China and a member of the Star Alliance. My experience with Air China has been generally pleasant, with a few notable highlights and areas for improvement.

Pros:

  • Extensive route network within China and to major international destinations
  • Modern aircraft fleet, ensuring a comfortable flying experience
  • Attentive and professional cabin crew

Cons:

  • Inconsistent service quality across different flights and routes
  • Occasional delays and flight disruptions, particularly during peak travel seasons
  • In-flight entertainment systems can be outdated on some older aircraft

Hong Kong Airlines

Hong Kong Airlines is a Hong Kong-based airline that primarily operates flights within Asia and to select destinations in North America and Europe. My experience with this airline has been generally positive.

Pros:

  • Competitive pricing for both economy and business class fares
  • Modern and comfortable aircraft cabins
  • Friendly and attentive cabin crew

Cons:

  • Limited route network compared to larger airlines
  • In-flight entertainment and amenities can be basic, especially in economy class
  • Occasional delays or schedule changes due to operational challenges

EVA Air

EVA Air is Taiwan's leading international airline and a member of the Star Alliance. My experiences with this airline have been consistently excellent, making it one of my personal favorites for travel within Asia.

Pros:

  • Outstanding service and hospitality from the cabin crew
  • Excellent in-flight entertainment systems with a wide selection of movies and TV shows
  • Well-regarded business class and premium economy offerings
  • Reliable on-time performance and smooth operations

Cons:

  • Somewhat limited route network compared to larger global airlines
  • Economy class seating can feel a bit cramped on certain aircraft types

Overall, each airline has its strengths and areas for improvement. When choosing an airline, consider factors such as route network, pricing, in-flight amenities, and personal preferences. Regardless of the airline, being prepared and having reasonable expectations can go a long way in ensuring a pleasant travel experience.
