Question:

Johanna

Has anyone ever traveled on a passport that only has two months to expire?
We are flying to spain malaga tomorrow one stop off in Montreal with air transat I didn’t check my husbands passport it’s a Brazilian passport so there’s no passport office in calgary to get a day passport
Should we just try? I’m stressing out!

Check Spain's requirements. Some countries let you in as long as it is current.

Yes I’d try. If you have return trips booked and proof of an established life in Calgary (job, House) there shouldn’t be an issue. But yes check their consulate website.

I believe it can't be less than six months to expiry.

Profile picture of Michelle

Michelle

I wouldn't risk it.

Profile picture of Gursharn

I believe Passports and other documents accepted for entry must be valid for a minimum of 3 months beyond the period of intended stay, however you can always call your airline and they have a way to check the information.

Must be 3 months

We had issues in Peru with this. I wouldn't risk it

He’s Brazilian I think but I think it’s the same from what I saw

France is also Schengen and they say 6 months

Profile picture of Shelley

Shelley

Everything I’ve ever seen or the numerous countries i’ve visited, all require 6 months expiration on your passport.

Profile picture of Joe

Joe

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months for all international travel.

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

I mean we have nothing to lose at this point as our tickets are non refundable

Profile picture of Christin

Christin

Except for having to buy return tickets same day if you get refused entry in Spain. But chances are the flight attendants will catch it.

Profile picture of Karen

Karen

The airline gave my dad a discounted flight. He flew with klm

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Christine Randell if we get through from Canada I think spain will be fine my parents live there I have citizenship there they are pretty slack

Profile picture of Christin

Christin

Johanna the only person stopping you in Canada are the airline employees.

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

I think I read somewhere spain is one of the easiest countries to get in

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Christine Randell yeah do you think they are really tight on that?

Profile picture of Christin

Christin

Johanna it depends who you get! How much attention they’re paying...

Profile picture of Tacha

Tacha

We absolutely will stop you when checking in. Your passport MUST be valid for 3 months from your departure date in Spain. If the passport is only valid for 2 months we won’t check you in or board you. Just a heads up.

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Tacha what airline do you work for? air transat?

Profile picture of Tacha

Tacha

Yes

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Tacha and do you think it differs from who you get at the desk or it’s a definite , cause I mean I have overstayed visas etc and you get the people that let you through but is this that type of situation or this is something they really clamp down on

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Cause when I called air transat she said that it wasn’t then that was the problem but spain and that he would be able to travel to Montreal cause I mean there’s no embassy here for him to get his passport fast so he would have to fly

Profile picture of Tacha

Tacha

he absolutely has the right to travel to montreal but he wont be accepted to spain. It doesnt differ from what agent you get its the rules. Airlines that send passengers without the proper travel documents get fined. We just went through document training last week especially for this. Since its a schengen country the requirements are for 3 months valid past the departure date, its the same even for a canadian passport its just the rules.

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Tacha ok thank you for the info

Profile picture of Tacha

Tacha

With that being said since you have a connecting ticket the agents in Calgary will deny check in because he doesn’t meet travelling requirements

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Tacha since we have our boarding passes already printed out and just have to drop off bags where will they check our passports?

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Tacha are you going to come find us tomorrow and make sure we don’t get on the flight haha

Profile picture of Tacha

Tacha

Lol even with printed boarding passes they have to check documents it’s just the rules sorry

Profile picture of Karen

Karen

6 months expiration from the day you return. My dad got turned away at the Calgary international heading to Amsterdam

Profile picture of Desirée

Desirée

Yes and they wouldn't let me on the plane to Holland.

Profile picture of Laval

Laval

6 months miminum as far as I always know.

Profile picture of Maureen

Maureen

Yes 6months

Profile picture of Jessica

Jessica

I would try to reschedule your flight for a few days later and get a new rush passport. We were in London travelling to Germany for Oktoberfest and someone from Canada had 4 months left on their passport and was sent back to Canada that day.

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

It’s non refundable ticket
and there isn’t a Brazilian embassy in calgary for fast renewal

Profile picture of Chile

Chile

Can your husband get a Canadian passport?

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Chile no he’s just got a PR

Profile picture of Carmella

Carmella

It’s worth calling even on a non refundable ticket and seeing if they can make any accommodations on rebooking

Profile picture of Joceli

Joceli

I agree that the best option is trying to re-schedule. But he will have to fly to Vancouver to get an expedited passport. The consulate is pretty good at doing it last minute, but he needs to fly there and let them know beforehand.

Profile picture of Kara-Lei

Kara-Lei

flighthub has flights from Calgary to Van for under 200 right now

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Joceli Marina Cardozo do you know Brazilian embassy passport times? I can’t find online how long a fast track Brazilian passport would take

Profile picture of Joceli

Joceli

If you call them and explain I believe they can issue it in 24 hours (might be mistaken). I needed to renew mine pretty quickly but couldn't fly there, so I sent an email explaining the situation, sent it in super express mail and got it back in a week. They were pretty accommodating. It is worth a try. I also saw that you guys are stopping in Montreal, it might be worth checking with them also. Just remember that if you fly with your little one by yourself you need to have your husband sign an authorization and have someone else witness it, or else you might have problems too.

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Joceli Marina Cardozo ok just double checking your talking about a Brazilian passport you got cause I thought they maybe could do fast track Brazilian passports in Canada

Profile picture of Joceli

Joceli

Yes, I am Brazilian too

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Joceli Marina Cardozo thank you that’s given me hope that he may be able to get a passport in Montreal

I will send you a pm

They will detain you and make you renew it. Has happened to my family member. Would let them get on flight to manila.

Profile picture of Peggy

My friend was allowed to go to France with less than six months till expiry because she had her return ticket booked.

Profile picture of Desirée

Desirée

When they wouldn't let me on the plane because there wasn't 6 months left on my passport klm rebooked my flight for free the next day and I paid for a rushed passport which was ready the following morning. You can get your photo taken across the street. They will contact your refrences by phone as well so be prepared with the information needed.

I have travelled to Mexico with less than 2 months left. Some countries will allow it. There is a list, if you look on the government website.

Depends on the customs officer. Its happened to us.

Profile picture of Kathleen

It could be the airlines that stop you before you even leave. They will check your expiry date.

Profile picture of Sammy

Sammy

I’d be more worried about getting there and the airline not letting you go home because your passport will then be probably a month to expiry

Profile picture of Johanna

My husband will get a new passport in spain wie are there 3 weeks and there’s an embassy there

The airline won’t even let you board. They have a legal responsibility to ensure you have the proper documentation on entry. Failure to do so on their part can be VERY expensive. You will need to get ahold of the Brazilian Consular office in Montreal or Ottawa to see if there is anything you can do

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Yeah but will he be able to fly there to Montreal to get renewal of passport?

Profile picture of Johanna

Johanna

Because that would be option 2 our flight stops in Montreal and he could just stay there a few days and I head to spain with my son and he follows a few days later

Profile picture of Wayne

Wayne

Of course....it’s still domestic to Montreal. They have to change aircraft there; the airline just won’t check them through or issue a boarding pass

Profile picture of Diane

Diane

My son renewed his passport here in Calgary within three hours at the Harry Hays building downtown. You just need proof of your flight and they will expedite.

Oops I’m sorry. I missed the Brazilian part. I’m no help.

Traveling on a Passport with Short Validity

Traveling with a passport that has a short validity period can be a stressful situation, but it's not necessarily a deal-breaker. The validity requirements vary from country to country, and it's essential to check the specific rules for your destination.

General Passport Validity Rules

Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay. This is a common practice, but there are exceptions. Some countries may accept passports with a shorter validity period, while others may require a longer validity period.

Spain's Passport Validity Requirements

For entry into Spain, your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned stay in the country. This means that if your husband's Brazilian passport has two months of validity remaining, it should be acceptable for your trip to Malaga, Spain.

Transit Country Requirements

It's also essential to consider the passport validity requirements for any transit countries you may pass through. In your case, you have a stopover in Montreal, Canada. Canada generally requires that passports be valid for the entire duration of your stay. However, as you're only transiting through Canada, the passport validity requirements may be different.

Recommendations

If you're unsure about the passport validity requirements for your specific situation, it's always best to contact the embassies or consulates of the countries you'll be visiting, as well as the airline you're traveling with. They can provide you with the most up-to-date and accurate information.

While it's generally acceptable to travel with a passport that has a short validity period, it's advisable to renew your passport well in advance to avoid any potential issues or complications during your travels.

If you decide to proceed with your trip, ensure that you have all the necessary travel documents, including proof of onward travel and sufficient funds, as these may be requested by immigration officials.
