Avoid Heathrow if possible because of taxes.
Shilo
Oh? Taxes on flights?
Cheryl
The airport charges the airlines more in taxes/ fees to land there, making the plane tickets more expensive. Chk the cost for other routes or the London Gatwick airport before booking.
Monica
Gatwick.
Karli
Although their taxes are higher, I still found it cheaper to connect through Heathrow. Went to Greece last year... yvr-Heathrow-Athens. Had no issues.
Crystal
Usually cheaper to fly from Gatwick.
Kate
You can fly directly to Santorini from Gatwick, Amsterdam and Rome. If you're looking to visit the islands I would fly directly there.
Andrew
Also remember most European airlines charges alot for not having a printed ticket or luggage requirements.
Monica
i didnt know that!
Crystal
Yes, the cost of a checked bag is very high as I learned on a recent flight from Gatwick to Budapest (via EasyJet). EasyJet was going to charge me for checking my carry on bag because I also had a shoulder bag, but I managed to cram everything into my carry on. When EasyJet states "one carry on" that is it - no purse or any other bag!
Monica
geez, how much was an additional bag
Crystal
Monica At the boarding gate, the very cranky EJ employee told me it would be $50 GBP! Hence, my reason for stuffing everything into my carry on. But, I will say the EJ gate personnel in Prague were great i.e. after 10 days on the Continent my carry on bag was looking very overstuffed and they offered to check it without charge. They were doing this for other passengers as well. Go figure.
Andrew
Easyjet is high just like Ryanair and the dimensions is smaller than they state learned the hard way. Lucky for free wifi that I booked a luggage for my trip or else the cost of flight was 3 times higher.
Monica
That's crazy and very good to know for our next trip over there
Crystal
Andrew You are correct, the dimensions are smaller! Being at Gatwick for my flight, I observed travelers toting VERY small (at least in my eyes) carry on luggage and nothing else i.e. no handbag and I found out why at the gate. For future travels from Gatwick I'll take only the bare necessities and skinny down so my clothes take up less space and no shopping while away. I've also heard of travelers wearing many layers to avoid taking a larger bag, but that would be so uncomfortable. LOL
Andrew
In order for a carry on has to below 40l but how I saw it most people are carrying around 35l
Monica
I wonder if things will be different now coz of the brexit
Monica
Just got back from UK two weeks ago. Gatwick is the cheapest way to fly. Heathrow was almost double. Let me check a good route for u since this is my hobby
Monica
oh wait. i cant coz u said 2017 lol but Gatwick is the cheapest way to go and Air Transat is such an awesome airline, they're so nice - all about customer service, i will never fly with AC again unless im in business class, and even business class, theyre pricks and super $$$$$
Andrew
westjet flys direct to gatwick
Monica
They're expensive tho
Andrew
If you can catch a good deal its cheap I flew to Gatwick for 261
Monica
Omg drew that's insane
Andrew
round was like 500 at the time of purchase
Monica
we paid about 650 RT for May Long week
Andrew
thats a great deal
Monica
Ya i did good haha
Sharron
Avoid Ryan Air! Brutal!
Crystal
I could say the same about EasyJet, but now that I understand their one carry on bag rule, I will govern myself accordingly. Because their fares are decently priced, I would probably use them again for a short haul flight London/Continent return.

I just flew them from Stansted to Corfu and was expecting the worst since my checked bag was 0.5kg over, my camera backpack/carry on was oversized as well as I'm sure over the 10kg limit, my "personal item" (purse) was bigger than it should have been, and I also had a shopping bag, yet I wasn't charged anything extra or given any hassle. That being said, the onboard service was terrible and nothing is included (no entertainment and not even some free water to take a pill). Thankfully it was a short flight.
Crystal
Angela Air carrier? Cost for your checked bag?
Sharron
Apparently you can pre-pay for over weight bags. Biggest problem is Ryan Air has no agent at airport so in case of a problem, out of luck!
Suzy
We flew Vancouver to Gatwick, Rome and then to Athens. In Rome we changed flights from Air Transit to Air Italia. If not mistaken it only took about an hour and thirty.

Traveling to Greece in May 2017
If you're planning a family trip to Greece in May 2017 and are considering booking flights from a northern BC town, you may have come across the option of flying from YVR (Vancouver International Airport) to Heathrow and then from Heathrow to Athens. This route not only offers a better schedule for flights but also seems to be cheaper.
Many travelers have experienced similar scenarios where booking flights with layovers or connecting flights can sometimes result in better schedules and cost savings. In this case, flying from YVR to Heathrow and then from Heathrow to Athens could be a viable option for your family of 5.
It's always a good idea to compare different flight options, routes, and airlines to find the best deal for your travel plans. Sometimes, booking separate flights for different legs of the journey can be more cost-effective than booking a direct flight.
Before making your final booking, make sure to check the layover times, transfer processes, and any visa requirements for the countries you'll be transiting through. It's also a good idea to consider travel insurance and any other necessary arrangements for a smooth and hassle-free trip.
Overall, if flying from YVR to Heathrow and then from Heathrow to Athens offers a better schedule and cost savings for your family, it could be a great option to consider for your trip to Greece in May 2017.
