I did a solo trip few years back, 2 weeks to Tokyo, Osaka and kyoto. And went last year with my husband. Very safe country, friendly people, but not a lot of English speakers so good idea to learn a few necessity words and do research on their transit system in the big cities, can get very confusing for first timers. I've been to Japan as a solo traveler and also with my husband and kids. One of my favourite places, felt totally safe yet unique and challenging at the same time.

One of the safest place to travel as a single woman. Great country!

Never done solo ever. However, I have been to Japan and going again soon. It’s the best country I have ever visited. The cleanliness is like no where else. The people are polite and courteous and getting around was so easy. Their train system is great. We found a lot of English was spoken. Have fun!

Did it 4 yrs ago... Wrinkled girl, then 70,..Tokyo, Kyoto, Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Snow Monkeys near Nagano... Used Train pass for easy transport between places... Hostel stays.. Then for 1.5 weeks on to Korea... DMZ, Seoul, Pusan... No communication problems anywhere... Easy public transport to everything wanted... V e r y SAFE

Hostel 64 Osaka is the best hostel I have ever stayed in!! Cannot reccomend enough. So clean and professional. A lot of single travelers there too so easy to make friends

Did 2 weeks in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka on my own this year as my first trip alone! very safe and did not feel uncomfortable or lost at any point. Order wireless internet ahead of time (not a SIM card but that works too) and you’ll have no problem getting around. Found it was harder to make friends compared to other places I travelled and ended up doing more solo exploring than I would’ve thought! Still enjoyable though

Speaking for Osaka area, I’ve always felt safe alone. Great place to travel solo

I used to live in Japan - it's definitely a safe country for solo female travellers. The biggest issue would be a language barrier in mo re rural areas - in the big cities, you should be fine with just English. Have a great time!

As others have mentioned, Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto are all excellent bases for solo ladies. Language was not an issue and everyone was so eager to help. You won’t regret taking this trip!

Yep. First trip ever and it was solo. I did as much research as I could ahead of time and had no problems. Safe, mostly friendly people, easy to get around, and language wasn't an issue even in more rural areas as Google translate helped out a bit.

Great choice for a solo female trip!

Yes, extremely safe and clean, and good food. No worries about walking alone at night. Get a SIM card or rent a portable Wi-Fi as you can't download offline Google maps of Japan. This will help you figure out which train, train platform and entrance/exit to go to. I didn't understand how addresses worked in Japan, so Google maps was so helpful. Train announcements are also done in English in the big cities.

Great country, no personal crime, easy to get around friendly helpful people. I have been there more than fifteen times over many years. I recommend that you give no less than five days of your trip to Kyoto if you want to see a more historical cultural city. Kyoto is only second to the Vatican City for the number of World Heritage sites.

Hi! I just got back today from 3 weeks in japan with 2 weeks on my own. Let me know what info you need :))

I traveled around Japan alone for 34 days in 2017, lots of couch surfing, had a rail pass. Flew into Haneda and traveled so many places south of Tokyo, highly recommend smaller towns/villages. I do speak very basic Japanese though which did help me from time to time.

I havent travelled there alone, but I know when I travelled there with my partner I felt very, very safe. Definitely a place you could travel solo!

I'm a guy, so I can't speak directly to feeling safe as a woman of course, but I was traveling around solo in Japan in February and it was great. Used the rail pass, stayed in great places using Couchsurfer .com (only choose women with a ton of good reviews if you are worried about feeling safe) and I had a great, time. すごい楽しかった！Please ask if you have any questions!

Travelled alone as a senior before and after access to Google translate. Definitely easier with it. So safe for a woman traveling alone.

first time I went to Japan I was 19 and stayed 4 days in Tokyo. Never felt unsafe or under pressure. Been back since with my partner and again felt perfectly safe. Enjoy yourself
