Need Suggestions for Winter Travel That Won't Break the Bank?

Question:

I'm planning on traveling between Xmas (Dec 25) and just after New Years. Don't have any particular destination in mind as long as it's less than an 8-10 hour plane ride away and isn't in the dead of winter. Any suggestions of affordable places to go? (Flights in particular)I was considering Paris and London but better options welcome.

That's one of the most expensive weeks to fly in the entire year. Everything is more pricey than even the week before or after. If you can, I would choose a different week. If not, since your money won't go as far, I would look at the Caribbean. Europe is pretty cold during that time and you won't get a good deal, likely.

Go on google flights or skyscanner.ca, enter the details (departing city and dates) but leave the destination blank and it will tell you the different prices for different destinations

Good prices sometimes reward those willing to travel on dec25 and or jan1, but really, dead of winter is as much upon Europe as here. Hopefully you're not committed to those dates; week before or after can make big difference

I have that time off from work paid so I figured why not travel. Definitely okay with travelling on the 25th.

You only choices are southern US, Mexico, central and south America plus Hawaii. Most of Europe will be in the "dead of winter"

As long as it's warmer than in Toronto it works for me.

You don't know that for sure. There were more snow in Europe than in Toronto two years ago. And with the day light so short, ull be in the dark more, combining with the short business hours and closures in Europe during Xmas, making it unpopular during that time

I just did a quick search on google flights Dec 25-Jan 3...looks like Portugal & Madrid are pretty reasonable, around $1000. Carribbean and S. America are super pricey (aka not a good value for your money). Milan is $972. Doha is $970 if you want to go to the middle east. It'll be warm enough there for sure. There's more so just do the same search if you want to see the results. Hope that helps!

Europe in the winter is fabulous! You'll still see the Xmas markets, it won't be overrun with tourists ... I'm a big fan if Europe in the winter! London will be chilly but not freezing by any means. I've also been to Rome and through Tuscany in December - beautiful! Enjoy!

Affordable Winter Getaways for Christmas Break

Are you feeling the winter blues and looking to escape the cold for a few days during the Christmas and New Year's break? With a budget in mind and a desire for warmer weather, here are some affordable destination ideas that are less than an 8-10 hour flight away.

Cancun, Mexico

Cancun is a popular choice for those seeking sun, sand, and vibrant nightlife. With direct flights from many major cities in the U.S., you can find relatively inexpensive airfare, especially if you book well in advance. Once there, you'll find plenty of affordable all-inclusive resorts and hotels to suit any budget. Enjoy the beautiful beaches, explore the Mayan ruins, or simply relax by the pool with a margarita in hand.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico offers a tropical escape without the need for a passport if you're traveling from the U.S. mainland. San Juan, the capital city, is a vibrant destination with colorful colonial architecture, lively nightlife, and stunning beaches. Flights from major U.S. cities are often reasonably priced, and you can find budget-friendly accommodations in the heart of Old San Juan or along the beach.

Cartagena, Colombia

For a more off-the-beaten-path destination, consider Cartagena, Colombia. This charming colonial city boasts colorful buildings, historic fortifications, and beautiful beaches. While flights from the U.S. may be a bit pricier than some other destinations, you'll find incredibly affordable accommodation, food, and activities once you arrive. Explore the walled city, relax on the nearby islands, or indulge in the local cuisine.

Tulum, Mexico

If you're looking for a more laid-back and bohemian vibe, Tulum on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula might be the perfect fit. With its pristine beaches, Mayan ruins, and eco-friendly accommodations, Tulum offers a unique and affordable vacation experience. Flights to nearby Cancun are often inexpensive, and you can find budget-friendly boutique hotels, cabanas, or Airbnb rentals in Tulum.

No matter where you choose to go, booking your flights and accommodations well in advance can help you score the best deals. Consider traveling during the week or over the holidays themselves for even better prices. With a bit of planning, you can escape the winter blues and enjoy a memorable and affordable getaway.
