You're just in San Jose? Too bad. The national parks are wonderful and the cloud forest is great. Most stuff is less than a few hours drive away... Arenal Volcano is pretty cool and you could visit Manuel Antonio National Park - both are good for day trips. I recommend getting local guides as they are all trained in local flora and fauna of their areas. You'll be pleasantly suprised at how well educated Ticans are. If you only have a few hours, I'd recommend seeking out some of the walking tours (food, chocolate, coffee plantation). If you speak some spanish, the Mercado Central (Central Market) is always fun, and the national museum is interesting. If you stick around the tourist areas, most people speak english. Even in the off-the-beaten-path, you can usually find someone with enough language to get by. If you're staying at a hotel, ask them as they are accustomed to what is available nearby. I find Costa Rica much easier to visit than other central american countries (even Mexico). You're going to have a wonderful time. Pura Vida!!

Rescate Animal Zooave was our favourite place. If you have little time spending it at a beach is a waste because there is so much to see.

Costa Rica Animal rescue ... it’s about 1/2 away from San Jose and it’s amazing. I volunteered there for a month last year.
