Hi..does anyone have any travel advice for johannesburg and capetown south africa?

Highly recommend the garden route tour for about 5 days from cape town. A little europe in S africa.

Cape Town in beautiful with lots to see and do - great restaurants and hotels. For North American comforts stay at the Victoria and Albert waterfront. For more adventure stay in Bo Kaap (try the Rose on Rose).

Also go to wine country on a day trip and definitely down the Cape - don’t miss the penguins.

Jo’burg is more dangerous and industrial - stay only in Sandton. Visit the Apartheid Museum and Soweto. It’s also a 5 hour drive to Kruger Park and close to Botswana if you’d like to go on Safari.

Didn’t go to Sun City. You could go on an organized hop on hop off bus, a half or full day tour, arrange a taxi and driver with your hotel or self drive- if you do the latter check with your hotel for the best/safest route and keep all doors locked at all times (I travel solo and independently so am a bit more vigilant than most). That said - have a great time

We drove to Sun City this was back in 2003, September time it was super hot but felt safe. I’m guessing from comments 15yrs obviously changes things, so perhaps won’t offer any advice on rest of the trip we did!

be safe! no taxi's, just uber. Rent a car if you're there for a while, especially in Cape Town, so many amazing places around there to drive to like Laangaban, Franschoek, etc. And go on a safari!

Stellenbosh wine tour, robben island, table mountain hike. Always be extra cautious, an Afrikaaner told me in certain places they will Steal your hubcaps at a red light, then sell them back to you at the next red light

That’s about it. There’s reasons my husband left SA 20 years ago. He got tired of having to travel the backroads carrying a gun. His aunt just got carjacked a few weeks ago.

That is crazy ..sell it at the next light after stealing it first

Tracy my husbands aunt. They all Came from the Durban area but moved down to the cape area. I don’t really have any contact with her and they live on a farm. That in itself is scary these days. White farmers are being murdered at an alarming rate and it does not make the news here

Jeannett That's Africa??? What ARE you talking about?? Africa is a continent. I have previously spent many months (with two babies & husband) travelling through SA with NO problems. And yes, I am white. I think this is the most ignorant comment I have ever read on the YVR page.

Yes, keep your doors locked. All of them!! Stopping is dangerous.

Watch out for overpasses whilst driving they drop big rocks on windshields, friend died that way Don't acknowledge strangerseither

I am shocked by some of the utter nonsense I am reading on here.

Tracy, I am curious if you ended up going and if so, how it all went. Our family (teens) is looking to go.

Amy yes we did end up going however we hired a company to take us..I wouldn't suggest driving on your own..i think even with a GPS it would have been hard for us to navigate and you wouldn't want to end up in the wrong place by mistake
