Definitely stay in Lagos. I think the train still runs there. A week won’t give you much time to explore too much. Lisbon, Faro, Lagos will give you a nice taste but you’ll have to go back. I love Portugal!!

I was just in Lagos. Very beautiful cliffs and beaches. The town is nice too. 2-3 nights is all you need. Should be pretty quiet in January

We have done it all but love the western part of the Algarve more than Faro. You could consider taking the train to Tunes from Lisbon?

Kiki Oh that sounds like a rad option. whats Tunes like?

Kenneth - it’s s very small station in the middle of a sleepy little town. The train to Lagos goes from the opposite side of the tracks if I remember correctly correctly so you just have to go up and over the walkway.

You can take the train from Faro to Lagos, it’s cheap and runs often. Don’t miss Sagres -we took a bus from Lagos.

Exploring Southern Portugal

If you're planning a week-long trip to southern Portugal in January, taking the train from Lisbon to Faro is a great choice. Faro is a charming city with a beautiful old town, stunning beaches, and delicious seafood. However, if you have the time, I highly recommend visiting Lagos as well.

Lagos is a picturesque town located along the Algarve coast, known for its stunning cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant nightlife. While Faro offers a more traditional Portuguese experience, Lagos is perfect for those looking for a more lively atmosphere.

Since you won't have a car, both Faro and Lagos are easily accessible by train. The train ride from Faro to Lagos takes about 2 hours, making it a convenient option for a day trip or a few nights stay. In Lagos, you can explore the charming old town, relax on the beautiful beaches, and even take a boat tour to see the famous sea caves.

Overall, I would recommend splitting your time between Faro and Lagos to get a well-rounded experience of southern Portugal. Both cities offer unique attractions and charm that are worth exploring. Enjoy your trip!

Safe travels!
