I went to Japan (Tokyo, Kanazawa, Takayama, Kyoto & Osaka) for 2 weeks last year April. Check out my travel blog for my itinerary and all the other info from my travels http://boketto.rosannau.com/ Studio Ghibli Museum (My Neighbour Totoro, Spirted Away etc) in Mitaka is a great place to visit but you need to book the ticket online (tickets go fast and must be purchased on a certain day and time). I hear Kawaii Monster Cafe is a good place to take the family (reservations are recommended). Robot Restaurant is visually over stimulating but fun. Suzki-en - 7 levels of matcha green tea ice cream (north of Senso-ji temple).

The area of Nakano is really awesome if you're into vintage anime and stuff like that (Pokemon games), and the neighbourhood itself is a slice of "real Tokyo." Super comfortable, down-to-earth, and filled with unique restaurants, nice people, and super close to a train station (super convenient). I would recommend staying there!
