I wouldn't drive to Italy, there is so much to see in Germany. With 2 toddlers it would be too much time in car seats. You can literally stop in any small town anywhere and there will be something interesting to see and do. We have winged it many times on our trips to Germany just stopping anywhere we feel like. Have fun!

I agree. The hotels are great there, they will open a water park this summer.

Italy should be a longer trip. You can’t miss Barcelona and then want to visit Spain!

Check out Europa park in Rust, it's a must see!

Definitely check out a German „Freibad“ (outdoor pool), they’re the best - for every age.

Check out the "romantic mile" Wurzburg to Fussen. You can download an app that will highlight great information on all the key places to visit/ nifty information on the 350 km trip! The south of Germany is amazing!! We have gotten excellent rental rates through Costco for our cars. Try to also visit Essligen, beautiful city!

If you like Italy, Milano and Lago di Como is quite close from Southern Germany

Any rental car agency will be fine, but I really like billiger-mietwagen.de. It is a great website that compares prices

Family Road Trip in Europe: 10-14 Days in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland
Traveling with a family of four, including two toddlers, can be a wonderful adventure! Renting a car and exploring the scenic routes of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and family-friendly activities. Here are some suggestions and ideas to help you plan an unforgettable road trip:
Places to Visit
- Stuttgart, Germany: Visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum, explore the beautiful Schlossgarten, and enjoy the vibrant city center.
- Black Forest, Germany: Immerse yourself in the fairytale-like landscapes, visit charming towns like Triberg and Freiburg, and indulge in traditional Black Forest cake.
- Salzburg, Austria: Explore the birthplace of Mozart, stroll through the picturesque Altstadt (Old Town), and take a day trip to the stunning Lake District.
- Lucerne, Switzerland: Admire the iconic Chapel Bridge, take a boat ride on Lake Lucerne, and visit the Swiss Transport Museum (perfect for toddlers!).
- Interlaken, Switzerland: Experience the breathtaking Swiss Alps, enjoy a ride on the Jungfrau Railway, and explore the charming towns of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen.
Hotel Stays and Airbnb
Consider a mix of family-friendly hotels and Airbnb accommodations to suit your preferences and budget. Look for hotels with swimming pools, playgrounds, and kid-friendly amenities. Airbnb can offer more space and a homely atmosphere, perfect for families with young children.
Car Rentals
Renting a comfortable and spacious vehicle is essential for a family road trip. Consider a mid-size SUV or a van with ample luggage space and child car seats. Book your rental car in advance and compare rates from reputable companies like Sixt, Hertz, or Europcar.
Additional Tips
- Pack plenty of snacks, toys, and entertainment for the toddlers during the drives.
- Plan for regular stops to stretch your legs and let the kids burn off some energy.
- Embrace a slower pace and adjust your itinerary based on your family's needs and interests.
- Research family-friendly restaurants, playgrounds, and attractions along your route.
- Consider purchasing a European road trip planner or guidebook specifically designed for families.
With proper planning and an open mind, your family road trip through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland will create lasting memories and a shared appreciation for the stunning landscapes and cultural richness of these regions.
