How long are you going for? What time of the year?
Osaka is a quick train ride from Kyoto which you can do as same day or even a few days. We went up a few tall buildings/skyscrapers in Tokyo and Osaka to look out.

Go to Arashiyama in Kyoto, it was the highlight of my trip, so pretty. It has the monkey park and the bamboo grove. Also reccomend visiting fushimi inari shrine at night, there are less people and it has a slight spooky vibe which is actually really nice. Also reccomend a day trip to nara, it was great there.

Number one favourite things from my 13 times in Japan are the Gold and silver palaces in Kyoto. Walk the back streets there! Tokyo love the ghost cafe or all the theme restaurants. Take a bicycle tour in Tokyo. Not as scary as it sounds.

In Tokyo, visit Asakusa. In Kyoto, visit Arashiyama. If you want to experience a tradition hotspring resort (ryokan), hop over to Nikko from Tokyo for a night.
