Wonderful country to visit. Lots of culture and beautiful geography. I was there not too long after the tsunami came through and there was a definite sense of struggle and people seemed to be out only for your money. But there has been a bit of time since and that should have ebbed off quite a bit by now.
The southern coast near hikkadua and galle is quite nice. Central Sri Lanka near candy is beautiful as well.

I had one of the most memorable surfing experiences in southern Sri Lanka. Surfed during the sunset in the bathtub warm waters

Sri Lanka is beautiful! I volunteered in a turtle sanctuary & teaching English near Galle in 2007 (got the weekends off) some beautiful sunsets and beaches and the people are lovely. Not the cleanest place you'll go to especially the cities but well worth it. I popped over to Maldives for 3 nights after my trip too.

Canadian of Sri Lankan descent, so biased as well.
Places I'd recommend are: Sigiriya (ancient rock fortress), Adam's Peak (if the right season, can see the sun "dance"), city of Kandy in general, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, and Anuradhapura (ancient ruins). Beaches are incredible and, if you like the spice, the food is unbeatable.

Has anyone been to Sri Lanka?

Yes, I have been to Sri Lanka and I highly recommend it. It is a beautiful country with a rich culture and history. There is something for everyone in Sri Lanka, from stunning beaches to ancient ruins to lush tea plantations.

Highlights of Sri Lanka

  • Sigiriya Rock Fortress: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya Rock Fortress is a 200-meter-high rock that was once home to a royal palace. The climb to the top is challenging, but the views are worth it.
  • Temple of the Tooth: Located in the city of Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth is one of the most sacred Buddhist temples in the world. It is said to house the tooth of the Buddha.
  • Galle Fort: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Galle Fort is a 16th-century Dutch fort that is still inhabited today. It is a great place to walk around and explore the shops and restaurants.
  • Yala National Park: One of the best places in Sri Lanka to see wildlife, Yala National Park is home to elephants, leopards, crocodiles, and more.
  • Tea plantations: Sri Lanka is famous for its tea, and there are many tea plantations in the country. You can take a tour of a tea plantation and learn how tea is made.

Tips for traveling to Sri Lanka

  • The best time to visit Sri Lanka is during the dry season, which runs from December to April.
  • Sri Lanka is a relatively safe country, but it is always important to be aware of your surroundings.
  • The official languages of Sri Lanka are Sinhala and Tamil, but English is widely spoken.
  • The currency of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR).
  • Sri Lanka is a great place to buy souvenirs, such as tea, spices, and handicrafts.

Conclusion

Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with a lot to offer visitors. Whether you are interested in history, culture, or nature, you are sure to find something to love in Sri Lanka.
