We are going to Mexico next February for three weeks and we have the option to pay in pesos or U.S. Dollars and the payment in pesos is the equivalent of the U.S. Dollar rate. Which currency is the one we should pay in?

I suggest doing half and half. If they know you can pay in American, they feel they can charge you more. And it's always good to have back up money if something's happens.
Plus if you go to small shops in towns, they'll probably only take pesos. And you can bargain !

Should You Pay in Pesos or U.S. Dollars When Traveling to Mexico?

Planning a trip to Mexico? One of the first decisions you'll need to make is whether to pay in pesos or U.S. dollars. Both currencies are widely accepted in Mexico, but there are some advantages and disadvantages to each. Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons of each option:

Paying in Pesos

Pros:

  • You'll get a better exchange rate. The peso is currently undervalued against the U.S. dollar, so you'll get more pesos for your money if you exchange your currency before you go.
  • You'll be able to avoid paying foreign transaction fees. Many banks charge a fee for using your credit or debit card in a foreign country. If you pay in pesos, you can avoid these fees.
  • You'll be supporting the local economy. When you pay in pesos, you're helping to support Mexican businesses and workers.

Cons:

  • You'll need to exchange your currency before you go. If you don't have time to do this, you may have to pay a higher exchange rate at the airport or your hotel.
  • You'll need to carry more cash. If you're planning on doing a lot of shopping, you'll need to carry more pesos with you than you would if you were paying in U.S. dollars.

Paying in U.S. Dollars

Pros:

  • It's more convenient. You won't have to worry about exchanging currency or carrying around a lot of cash.
  • You'll be able to use your credit or debit card without paying foreign transaction fees. Many banks don't charge foreign transaction fees for purchases made in U.S. dollars.

Cons:

  • You'll get a worse exchange rate. The peso is currently undervalued against the U.S. dollar, so you'll get fewer pesos for your money if you pay in U.S. dollars.
  • You may have to pay a higher price for goods and services. Some businesses in Mexico charge a higher price for goods and services if you pay in U.S. dollars.

So, which currency should you pay in?

The best currency to pay in depends on your individual circumstances. If you're looking for the best exchange rate and you're willing to exchange your currency before you go, then paying in pesos is the way to go. However, if you're looking for convenience and you don't want to deal with the hassle of exchanging currency, then paying in U.S. dollars is the better option.

Ultimately, the decision of which currency to pay in is up to you. Weigh the pros and cons of each option and make the choice that's best for you.
