Just got back from our second time to Costa Rica. If you are willing to go off the beaten path a wee bit, this is where we stayed. AMAZING! Spent 6 days here then carried on to Manuel Antonio. The first time we did the typical touristy stuff, Monteverde, Arenal and Tamarindo. But this, this was amazing. Read the reviews and the whole sight. You will be so busy! Private beaches etc. Can't go wrong, the owner's are amazing as is the staff. https://www.vrbo.com/669332...

They arranged to have a shuttle pick us up from the airport, then when we left, had rental cars waiting for us in Sierpe so we didn't have to worry about paying for or storing vehicles while we were up the river. Zip lining is expensive but a must do (when in Rome). We did it in Manuel Antonio and in Monteverde. Monteverde is a must. It's a great place. There is a little B&B - Mariposa. It's run by Estoban and his Mom. It's inexpensive and very friendly and helpful.

Medellin in Colombia is fabulous. If you go there stay in the area of El Poblado and I recommend Hotel Diez which was excellent, clean, cheap & great location. Be sure to visit Botero Park and catch the cable cars - we rode the train and cable cars around one day just seeing the city sights.
If you go to Cartagena in Colombia the old/walled city is so beautiful. Lots to wander right through the city. Cartagena is not cheap though and will be very hot.

- Colombia: San Andres (overdeveloped and expensive), Leticia (difficult to get to and not much to see), Cucuta (dangerous and not worth visiting)
Tips for Saving Money
- Travel during the off-season. The best time to visit Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia is during the shoulder months (April-May and September-October). This is when you'll find the best deals on flights and accommodations.
