Has anyone had a layover in the Haneda airport in Japan? Is there much to do? Considering doing a stay over, but we will have a toddler with us.

Any amount of time in Tokyo is usually totally worth it. And Haneda is sooo much closer to everything than Narita.

There's decent shopping and good restaurants at Haneda. You could easily kill several hours there.

There is tons to do at that airport, lots of shops and restaurants and even a planetarium. Just don't make the same mistake we did, after checking in we went through the security right away and after security there are only a few shops and restaurants and you can't go back out. Check in, then go upstairs for all the good stuff then just go through customs close to your flight time.

Layover at Haneda Airport in Tokyo with a Toddler

Haneda Airport

Haneda Airport, officially known as Tokyo International Airport, is one of the two primary airports serving the greater Tokyo area, and it's a common transit point for travelers. If you're considering a layover at Haneda Airport with a toddler, here are some insights and tips to help you make the most of your stay.

Amenities and Facilities

Haneda Airport offers a range of amenities and facilities that can make your layover more comfortable, especially when traveling with a young child. The airport has several play areas and family lounges where your toddler can run around and burn off some energy. These areas are equipped with toys, books, and other entertainment options.

Additionally, the airport has several restaurants, cafes, and convenience stores where you can grab a bite or pick up snacks and drinks for your little one. If you need to freshen up, there are also showers and nursing rooms available.

Things to Do

While Haneda Airport may not be as massive as some other international airports, there are still a few activities and attractions that can keep your toddler entertained during a layover.

  • Observation Decks: Haneda Airport has several observation decks where you can watch planes take off and land. This can be an exciting experience for young children, and it's a great way to pass the time.
  • Shopping: The airport has a variety of shops selling souvenirs, toys, and other items that might interest your toddler. You can even pick up some traditional Japanese snacks or treats.
  • Airport Tours: Haneda Airport offers guided tours of the airport facilities, which can be an educational and entertaining experience for kids.

It's worth noting that if you have a longer layover, you might consider leaving the airport and exploring the nearby areas of Tokyo. However, this may not be practical or feasible with a toddler, especially if you have a significant amount of luggage.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Haneda Airport is a relatively child-friendly environment, and with proper planning and preparation, you can have a comfortable layover with your toddler. Pack some toys, books, and snacks to keep them entertained, and take advantage of the airport's facilities and amenities. Remember to stay vigilant and keep an eye on your little one at all times, as airports can be busy and crowded places.
