Use a credit card for your purchases that way you ensure the current daily rate. If you exchange a larger amount of money it will always be at that rate until you spend the last dollar. When the dollar is low like this you need to take advantage of every point.

Make sure you have a CC that does not charge the extra 2.5% most do

Is it Better to Exchange Currency at a Bank or Exchange Place?

When it comes to exchanging Canadian dollars for US dollars, or any other currency, the choice between a bank and an exchange place can make a significant difference in the rates and fees you'll pay. Let's explore the pros and cons of each option.

Banks

Banks offer the convenience of handling currency exchange transactions alongside other banking services. If you're already a customer, it may be more convenient to exchange your money at your bank. However, banks typically charge higher fees and offer less favorable exchange rates compared to dedicated currency exchange places.

Pros of Using a Bank:

  • Convenience for existing customers
  • Familiarity and trust in the institution
  • Potential for additional services (e.g., traveler's checks, travel insurance)

Cons of Using a Bank:

  • Higher fees and less competitive exchange rates
  • Limited hours and availability (especially on weekends and holidays)
  • Potential for long wait times during peak periods

Currency Exchange Places

Currency exchange places, such as those found in airports, shopping malls, or dedicated exchange offices, are businesses that specialize in foreign currency transactions. These places generally offer better exchange rates and lower fees compared to banks, as currency exchange is their primary business.

Pros of Using a Currency Exchange Place:

  • Competitive exchange rates and lower fees
  • Specialized knowledge and expertise in currency exchange
  • Convenient locations and extended hours

Cons of Using a Currency Exchange Place:

  • Potentially less secure or regulated than banks
  • Limited additional services (e.g., traveler's checks, travel insurance)
  • Varying rates and fees between different exchange places

In general, if you're looking to get the best exchange rate and pay the lowest fees, a dedicated currency exchange place is often the better choice. However, if convenience and the ability to access additional services are priorities, a bank may be more suitable for your needs.

Regardless of your choice, it's always a good idea to shop around and compare rates and fees from multiple sources before exchanging your currency. Additionally, be aware of any hidden fees or commissions that may not be immediately apparent.
