Any why isn’t there a direct flight from YYC to Cancun?
Denise
Playa del Carmen is better for your family
Denise
I've only been to a riu there but it is cleaner and safer, I believe.

I know the all inclusive program is way over priced at villa del palmar your better to buy groceries at wal mart and cook there (more apartment/condos). So for all inclusive go to grand xcaret or grand sunset princess. I have been to both and the xcaret is attached to a very cool zoo park. I have a 2 and 6 yr old and we are going to a royal resort in cancun on Friday. But playa and the Mayan are much more secluded for sure.
Krista
Cancun is a big cement city with Palm trees - I love Playa Del Carmen but a majority of your all inclusive will be in the Mayan Riviera which is about 15min from Playa. Most all-inclusive packages from sunwing, Sunquest, westjet, Aircanada & Transat will be charted direct flights and often cheaper than booking flight/hotel separately.

playa is better for families i feel we go every year to Cancun and go to Playa to shop lol but more kids there than down in cancun
Carol
we stay at The Royal Hotel but its only adults but next door they have chillins lol

I've stayed on the Riviera Maya with friends at the Grand Bahia Principe Coba. When you stay there you have the run of three resorts. It is about 15 - 20 minutes out of Playa del Carmen. I believe they have family things to do and you can catch shuttles and taxis to many sites in the area. We enjoyed a tour to Chichen Itza, Xelha, and Tolum. The service was great, just brush up on some basic Spanish.

PDC all the way.

I stayed at the Villa Del Palmar in Cabo San Lucas and its a grat resort. I believe the one in Cancun is new and supposed to be fantastic. The reviews on trip advisor are great. They too have time share properties, but I found them not to be pushy if you are not interested in a viewing.
Carol
The Royal in Playa is walking distance to 5th Ave and its right on the ocean and close to the ferries also lots to do and see there all in walking distance
Catherin
The Royal looks great - but adults only.

Barcelo! In the Mayan riviera (cancun airport) - I cannot say enough. We stayed at the barcelo maya beach
Dita
Catherin-Lubitz, Steve and I stayed at a Barcelo location and it was awesome! Food, room, service, everything. I have done many AI over the years and wished I'd tried a Barcelo sooner. We almost went to one Hailey is talking about but a last minute hurricane threat made us go to Cabo!

Dita Wegman Novak I have been looking at them, but because the kids are coming I need a suite. I need to be able to put the baby down in a quiet area and H won’t go to sleep if there is ANYTHING going on!
Hailey
Catherin-Lubitz - the one in the Mayan Riviera is a 5 resort complex, each getting nicer. The Palace is unreal....but I personally wouldn't spend the money when we aren't really hanging out in our room all day lol. You can get a suite to accommodate having the baby nap. Seriously, you won't regret it - it is set up for all types of travelers. We went without our kids but are DYING to take them.
Hailey
{there is a splash pad which would be perfect for the babe....and a little kids pool with a really fun playground in it}

Cancun vs Playa del Carmen for Family Vacation with Kids
Planning a family vacation with kids of different ages can be a challenge, but both Cancun and Playa del Carmen offer excellent options for an unforgettable holiday in Mexico's Riviera Maya region. Here's a closer look at the pros and cons of each destination to help you make the best decision for your family.
Cancun
Cancun is a well-established resort town known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and numerous all-inclusive resorts. The Villa del Palmar, which you mentioned, is an excellent choice for families, offering spacious accommodations, multiple pools, and a range of activities for all ages.
Pros:
- Wide selection of all-inclusive resorts with extensive amenities and kid-friendly facilities
- Larger hotels with more on-site entertainment options
- Easy access to attractions like Isla Mujeres, Xcaret, and Xel-Ha
- Plenty of dining and shopping options
Cons:
- Crowded beaches and a more touristy atmosphere
- Longer travel time from the airport
- Higher prices, especially during peak seasons
Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is a charming coastal town with a more laid-back vibe and a vibrant pedestrian-friendly downtown area. While it may not offer as many all-inclusive resorts as Cancun, there are still plenty of excellent options, often at a more affordable price point.
Pros:
- Smaller, more intimate atmosphere with a more authentic Mexican feel
- Easy access to nearby attractions like cenotes, eco-parks, and Mayan ruins
- Closer proximity to the airport (about an hour's drive)
- Lower prices for accommodations and dining
Cons:
- Fewer all-inclusive resort options compared to Cancun
- Beaches can be narrower and more crowded in some areas
- Fewer on-site amenities and entertainment options at some resorts
Ultimately, both Cancun and Playa del Carmen offer fantastic family-friendly experiences, and your decision may come down to personal preferences and budget considerations. If you prioritize a wide range of all-inclusive resort options and don't mind a more touristy atmosphere, Cancun might be the better choice. However, if you prefer a more authentic Mexican experience and a more laid-back vibe, Playa del Carmen could be the perfect destination for your family vacation.

Help! I am travelling to Mexico for the holidays with a 10 month old and an 8 year old, is Cancun or Playa del Carmen better for families?
I like what I see in Cancun at the Villa del Palmar but I am open to other options if anyone has any advice, I want All-Inclusive! Thanks
