Try and stay at a vrbo or a Residnce Inn (Marriott) as they have kitchenettes. Downtown San Diego is expensive but there are so many great options in Caramel Mountain or La Jolla which is still close to beach. If you are planning on hitting up the big ticket attractions pre purchase for a savings or consider one of the CityPasses (Costco sells them)

Thanks!

I second the passes. We did kayaking in La Jolla. It was a ton of fun. You’d have to book those in advance. We also did the USS Midway tour which was very cool.

Hi Robyn, I was there last week and there are a lot of great places to eat, particularly Mexican food of course. I would say my favorites were Cocina 35 (downtown) and Trust (kind of near North Park).
Here's my Google map from San Diego, it has a lot of the highest rated yelp food places on it - way too many to try them all unfortunately!

And it also has sights and activities on it. Just NW of San Diego are the La Jolla Coves, home to a lot of seals and sea lions.
And then just north of that is Torrey Pines state park which has some great easy hikes along some cliffs beside the ocean - very scenic.
Install a few apps (Bird and Lime) before you go, if you want to try scootering around on motorized standup scooters. There's thousands of them all over the city. You just point your phone at them to unlock them, and leave them wherever you end up. It's a great way to get around quickly. uber is also really cheap there.
North Park is a nice, trendy area close to a lot of breweries and restaurants, and is a good place to focus on when looking at Airbnbs.

If you are interested in the Zoo and some of the museums and gardens in Balboa Park they also have a pass that covers them all.

And the Trolley tours are great too
Ken
20$ week bus pass, obtainable in the airport was incredible value and takes you everywhere on buses and trolleys (right to Mexican border)
