When are you planning on going to Costa Rica? Know that the turtles are not year-round in Tortuguero. I was in Tortuguero in March when it wasn't turtle season and still had a great experience. I found the boat journey from Moin (near Limon) to Tortuguero to be prettier than La Pavona.

I've been to Costa Rica twice - it's great! Everything I have written about travelling there it is here: http://www.savoirthere.com/.../conti.../americas/costa-rica/ and I was lucky enough to do the turtle conservation too and there's a video and info here if that helps. http://www.savoirthere.com/12492/7-secret-sunny-moments/ enjoy!

Costa Rica: Turtle Conservation and Beyond

Hi there! I'm glad you're considering a trip to Costa Rica. Tortuguero National Park is definitely a must-visit destination for anyone interested in turtle conservation. This remote park on the Caribbean coast is renowned for its nesting grounds for green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles, and leatherback turtles.

During the nesting season (typically from March to October), you can witness the incredible sight of these ancient creatures coming ashore to lay their eggs. Many eco-lodges and tour operators in the area offer guided tours and volunteering opportunities to assist with turtle conservation efforts, such as monitoring nests, protecting hatchlings, and collecting data.

Keep in mind that Tortuguero is a remote area, accessible only by boat or small airplane. It's best to plan your visit in advance and consider staying at one of the eco-lodges within the park or nearby communities.

Other Highlights of Costa Rica

While turtle conservation in Tortuguero National Park is an incredible experience, Costa Rica has so much more to offer. Here are some other must-visit destinations and activities:

  • Arenal Volcano: This iconic volcano offers stunning views, hot springs, and adventure activities like hiking, ziplining, and waterfall rappelling.
  • Manuel Antonio National Park: Home to beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, and an abundance of wildlife, including sloths, monkeys, and colorful birds.
  • Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve: A nature lover's paradise, with hanging bridges, ziplines, and opportunities to spot exotic flora and fauna.
  • Surfing: Costa Rica is renowned for its world-class surf spots, like Tamarindo, Jaco, and Pavones, suitable for beginners and experienced surfers alike.
  • Whitewater Rafting: Experience the thrill of rafting down the Pacuare River, considered one of the best whitewater rafting destinations in the world.

Costa Rica is a true natural paradise, offering a wealth of outdoor adventures, stunning landscapes, and opportunities to immerse yourself in the local culture. Whether you're interested in turtle conservation, hiking, surfing, or simply relaxing on beautiful beaches, this Central American gem has something for everyone.
