Find something out of time square NYC is expensive any time of year. You wont get much for your money. Our last hotel we stayed in was the manhattan time square. It was a dive and expensive. Stay out a bit and take the subway.

Stay anywhere with subway access and it's easy to get around. For $30 you can get a 1 week train pass that gets you everywhere in very little time.
If he wants to be in Manhattan, going further South towards the financial district or Tribeca has better pricing than Midtown hotels.
We just stayed at the Roxy Hotel Tribeca and loved it.

Hampton Inn, Manhattan, Times Square Central on West 41st. Nice, clean, central but not right in the bustle of Times Square. Close to everything!

AirBNB is by far the most cost effective.

* Consider staying in a less popular neighborhood. Hotels in popular neighborhoods like Midtown Manhattan will be more expensive than hotels in less popular neighborhoods like Queens or Brooklyn.
