You should research Herculaneum as an option instead of Pompeii . It’s a much smaller, wealthier and more preserved area.

Poisitano and Ravello are worth the drive from Sorrento

My husband and I were in Italy in Sept - Oct. We started in Rome visited Cinque Terre, Venice, Florence ... did a long-distance walk from Florence to Siena then back to Rome then home
Cinque Terra is really overrun with tourists - I would recommend Vernazza or Manorola if you are wanting to stay in the park. If you are looking for a more local feel but still easy access to Cinque Terra, I would recommend staying in Levanto, the small seaside village at the end of the train line past Monterosso al Mare. We stayed in Manerola but if we went back we would definitely stay in Levanto. Loved Rome, there is so much to see!
We stayed in Aventino (Hotel Avenito) then in Spagna (La Settima Luna Guest House Roma) can find them on booking.com .. both good locations to walk the city and easy access to the metro. Get your tickets to whatever attractions (Coloseum, Vatican City + Museum) you want to see ahead of time ie book online so you are not standing in lines - we always got the audio guide which was well worth it

Kate we are planning to spend 2 nights in Manorola

Nice - easy to get to all five villages from there ... have fun!

We cruised through Rome so I can’t comment on where to stay but Pompeii had the best pizza in their cafeteria. I tried pizza at multiple places and was shocked a cafeteria would have the best. If you like hiking try hiking between some of the towns in Cinque Terre. You need to buy a pass before you get on the train to hike the trails however.

Spent 5 weeks in Italy last year. I have no desire to ever see Naples again. It's a filthy city

Don’t do Naples and more time in Sorrento!!!!
Jason
we are only staying in Naples because we are flying out of there the last morning and plan to spend our last day at Pompeii

Watch out for pickpockets in Rome especially on the subway. They go for your pockets as soon as the doors open or close
Heather
Stayed in Vernazza for 2 nights and should of stayed longer! Hiked Vernazza to Manorolo and took the ferry boat back to Vernazza. Super resonable and get a water view of all the towns on the way back! Much more relaxing than the train.

My son stayed in Sorrento and loved it. He went to Pompeii early and had the

If you're going to visit Vatican, pay for the early morning tour that gets you in before the crowds. Totally worth it.

Jo or if it’s within budget, pay a private tour guide who can guarantee front of line access. We had one gifted to us for our honeymoon, and let me tell you....it made a HUGE difference. I feel like there was one gigantic line snaking into each section of the Vatican, and if not for our tour guide, we would have been stuck in lines allllll day and missed out on the rest of Rome. Some things are worth the money and this is one of those things.
On the other hand, don’t feel the need to splurge on a tour guide for the pantheon or colosseum, unless you’re interested in hearing the history. The lines for both move very fast.
Jason
We looked into the private tour guide but it looks like it costs around $450+ same as the Vespa tour, we heard it’s a must but for that price we will likely take the hop on hop off bus
