I spent a week each in Spain and Portugal. You'd never go wrong choosing either, although I think Spain came out a bit ahead because of the fabulous food! Madrid, Seville, Toledo, Granada....
Andrew
Portuguese food was so much better and cheaper. Especially south of Lisbon
Linda
Seville was amazing , best food consistently of anywhere I’ve been in Europe. And cheap outside the super tourist areas. Portugal had way better sangria, go figure. In Spain try a tinto de Verano.
Andrew
Linda white sangria was the best
Sharon
You're all putting the thought in my mind that I need to travel to this part of the world again!

Depending on where you plan to go Portugal is not warm in September/October....
Sharon
I was in Spain and Portugal at the end of September. The weather was great (other than one rainy afternoon/evening in northern Spain.)

Portugal for sure! With 10 days you could see 3 places and I think Porto, Lisbon and Lagos would be a lovely mix!

Great suggestions! I really appreciate the feedback. I need to fly my son in from Hamburg . How accessible are these destinations ?
Andrew
Hamburg is a popular spot. Pretty sure you'll find direct or stopover flights from there.

Ryanair flies from Hamburg to Faro, Lisbon Porto... if you book now its super cheap

Watch out for Ryan air, it can be false savings if they are at an out of the way airport. Paris was not good, Faro was ok. They also really ding you (25€) if you don’t print your own boarding pass and charge you 8 € to choose a seat, or won’t let you print the boarding pass until a few days before the flight. They charge 20€ for check baggage and ding people for heavy carryon. Lots of late/cancelled flights too. Try easyJet or Iberia owned veuling(?). All the Europeans we spoke to said it was last choice.

I’d google the flight and dates and go from there.

Try Sardinia. It’s a magical island. Very cheap Ryanair flights there. I paid $30 last sept barcelona to Cagliari. Then another $25 Cagliari to Bari. Lots to see and do and millions of beaches. Weather is very warm end of sept

It's great that you're planning to meet your son in Europe! Spain and Portugal are both fantastic choices for a warm getaway in September or October. Here are some suggestions for your trip:
Spain
Spain has so much to offer in terms of culture, history, and beautiful landscapes. Consider meeting your son in cities like Barcelona, Madrid, or Seville. You can explore the stunning architecture, enjoy delicious tapas, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere. If you're looking for some beach time, head to the Costa del Sol or the Balearic Islands.
Portugal
Portugal is known for its charming cities, beautiful beaches, and delicious cuisine. Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve region are all great options for a memorable trip. You can wander through historic neighborhoods, sample fresh seafood, and relax on golden sands. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the stunning cliffs of the Algarve!
Other Suggestions
If you're open to other destinations, you might also consider meeting your son in Italy, Greece, or the south of France. Each of these countries offers its own unique charm and attractions.
